After DSD file it doesn't play flac, it just grunts

I own Audirvana 3.5 and now I bought Origin. I have not encountered this problem before. I used the trial version for about 20 days and everything worked without a problem. Now I start a playlist and after DSD I hear flac 24-192 and I only hear a crackling sound. No other file can be played, only DSD. I have to go to the sound settings or even restart Audirvana. I also noticed that the program takes a very long time to start. The trial version started in 5 seconds and now it takes at least 40 seconds.
Thanks for any advice.

You are using nearly 100% (62.5GB) of your 64GB System RAM for playback preload memory… reduce this to 8GB.

Use ‘Power of Two’ up-sampling strategy to so to convert sample-rates to the logically correct device maximum sample-rate(s)…
Example:
(Power of Two will produce these logical results)

  • 44.14kHz → 705.6kHz
  • 48kHz → 768kHz
  • 88.2kHz → 705.6kHz
  • 96kHz → 768kHz
  • 176,4kHz → 705.6kHz
  • 192kHz → 768kHz

Remove eqMac… it is competing with Audirvāna for Core Audio API’s… If you are looking for EQ use the plug-in architecture.

Set the computer settings for Extreme control and disable the sub-system functions that you can manage there.

Turn-off volume leveling, and volume control… Use the volume on your amp to control the volume… There is no volume control when playing DSD files… No DSP at all can be done on 1-bit PDM (DSD) files.

Change these settings close Audirvāna, shut-down your DAC, shut-down the Mac, then restart the Mac, restart the DAC and then open Audirvāna.

Thank you very much for the advice. It helped, everything works as before.
I have one more question, I tried changing the upsampling from device maximum to DSD 128 and 256. What setting do you recommend Power of two or To DSD?

I modulate all PCM files DSD128… Here is a screenshot of my r8Brain settings for my TEAC UD-501 where I also employ one of the four FIR filters… you will need to fine-tune yours to your taste… By modulating all PCM to DSD the resulting output signal appears to the DAC output circuitry very naturally analog-like…
Screenshot 2025-01-31 at 11.04.39 PM

Good luck!
:notes: :eye: :headphones: :eye: :notes:

thanks, I’ll try it

Note: I replaced the screenshot because I cut off the “Safe volume reduction before DSD upsampling” setting in the first one…

:+1:

I want to explain why I reduce the gain before modulating PCM files to DSD… I do this to compensate for the increase in gain by utilizing an Audio Units (AU) HRTF DSP plug-in, as my playback system is headphone-centric… You can expect when adding plug-ins there will be a minimum of approximately +2dB in gain per plug-in and this compensation adjustment also helps me balance the output gain between native DSD (binaural) with the modulated PCM files up-to 24/352.8kHz.

:notes: :eye: :headphones: :eye: :notes:

Thank you for the explanation, if I understand correctly you are using PCM + AU HTRF plugin to the headphones.
I use the AU N band eq . I don’t know the HTRF plugin

I use 112dB’s “Redline Monitor” Audio Units plug-in (AU) that is good to 384kHz for HRTF processing of all PCM files that are subsequently modulated to 5.6MHz 1-bit PDM (DSD128) in r8Brain… Plug-in processing is done before Upsampling processing.

:notes: :eye: :headphones: :eye: :notes:

Hi, I downloaded the trial version. I ran the plugin but I had to change the upsampling from TO DSD to Power of Two and set up the plugin. Now if I change the upsampling to TO DSD128, will the plugin remain active?

What version of Audirvāna are you using? This display does not correlate with my Audirvāna Studio playback structure… You are showing here that the plug-in module is after the upsampling algorithm…

What does this display look like when you disable Volume Leveling? Why are you using Volume Leveling of DSD?

I’m using Origin, this is what it looks like after turning off volume leveling

This is what I see in Audirvāna Studio…

What I am seeing with your settings is that your files are upsampled to DSD and then decimated again to DXD (PCM) 352.8kHz for the processing and then modulated again to DSD…

[Note: My TEAC UD-501 plays up-to 5.6MHz (DSD128) it cannot play 11.2MHz (DSD256) files.]

EDIT:
I don’t know that the Origin signal flow is not the same as Studio… this is something to address with the Audirvāna team… It sure doesn’t seem that they have the same signal flow…

Are you playing a streaming file…?

When processing is not active, it is before upsampling.

Are you streaming a file or is this a local file… ? I don’t stream files… I only play local library files… Use the new AU API and turn-off Realtime Control

Me too, just from the disk
