Audirvāna Studio vs Roon

You don’t have to call the guy a liar…

I agree that I am disappointed there are so many issues.

On-the-other-hand … although sometimes difficult to justify changing meta-data (not on my system by-the-way) and difficulty displaying albums how I’d like AS still sounds terrific.

If you can’t afford the $120 a year in one payment, buying an audio program should be way down the list of things you need.

Should I take this personally? Whatever happened to standards of common decency? You shouldn’t be calling people liars. If I posted wrong information, why don’t you assume that I was mistaken rather than spreading lies? In this case, I neither lied nor was mistaken. A Roon subscription, paid annually, costs $ 9.99 a month – that’s € 8.50. Compared to AS, with its bugs and limited options, to me that’s a bargain.

Just to clarify regarding subscription costs, this is taken from my account page in Roon…

And this is the transaction from my bank statement…
But of course the $12.99 will vary in different countries depending upon the exchange rate when billed…

I certainly didn’t lie to anyone, I just told you what I was charged, and Roon is worth every penny.
And yes I was around when 1.8 was released, I thought it was a major improvement and it worked fine for MOST people, unfortunately the opposite seems to be the case with AS, it doesn’t work fine for MOST people :face_with_monocle:

Just comparing three versions of apps - Roon 1.7, Roon 1.8, AS 1.2.

First, I didn’t really hear the difference between Roon 1.7 and 1.8. I don’t understand why users hate 1.8. I may need to use this for a longer time to hear the difference, but at a fresh glance, I did not hear the difference in sound.

Next, I compared Roon 1.7 to AS 1.2 and I more liked the sound in AS. It sounds more bodily, juicy, rich. The sound in Roon is more polished, softer - it’s more like the sound when I turn on the DSD upsampling (r8brain) in AS.

@Antoine honestly tried to compare both platforms to decide what I want to buy.

Roon app looks like a product to sell, it works much faster, smoother, fewer bugs, and more. And AS app looks like a beta or even an alpha test. I would not rush to offer to buy this. First you need to polish it up to be called a product. Seriously, it is very slow and there is a lot of work ahead. Take your time to ask for money, let people be QA testers, give them an extended trial until the application becomes a product.

Great idea if I say so myself. (20)

Agree with every word.
I’m trying to talk myself into subscribing (even though I’m no fan of the subscription model), but can’t justify the expenditure, regardless of the relatively low cost, on an item that really doesn’t work as expected, if at all in my case.

I was on the free trial, I don’t make my own playlists; I listen to my own music ripped to a WD hard drive and I use Tidal.

I enjoy the sound of AS and personally find it better than 3.5.

Like many I have also been using Roon and this was via an NUC8i3. and ropieee software on a raspberry pi 3b

I’ve repurposed the NUC and installed Windows 10, running headless; with the pi and ropieee still in use, and downloaded AS and paid the reduced annual sum of £34.95.

It all still sounds ideal to me, and works well and, as recommended in this forum, Splashtop Personal, is in use temporarily as a remote.

I do enjoy Roon and will use it again in a different configuration, but I’ll be using AS now as I also like the whole look and feel of it.

I honestly thing this project is too much for only one person.

Its one thing to take on a project like this [Moode, Volumio etc] because its all for fun, but its quite another when you do it for money…you have expectations and duties when you have ‘customers’.

This can of worms has turned into a Swamp Monster!

Glad it works for you.

Enjoy the music!

what sucks is i do think audirvana does sound better than roon…

but we are NEVER getting last.fm support which is a deal-breaker as well as not having built in EQ so you have to buy a probably more expensive EQ VST

there are many built in free EQs in Audirvana v3.5 or Studio
or you can add free EQ if you want too, or like me, have a paid one…

cool (im pretty sure i could just use PEACE)… i still wish there was any way to put last.fm scribbling on there but they never put it in ever

No man, it is not personally. I apologize if I was rude. I was not my intention.

Interesting, I got the same feeling about HQP and HQP combined with Roon. HQP itself sounds really good, smooth and yet detailed. I primarily use HQP without upsampling and filters, in this manner, HQP is very enjoyable! When I have HQP running under Roon control, sound quality just suffers!
I‘m using HQP for critical listening, but I sorely miss Qobuz when listening to HQP! That’s why I do need to rely either on Audirvana or Roon, but I clearly prefer Audirvana soundwise over Roon!

Subjective and therefore with limited merit. Tried both after using Audirvana for few years and couldn’t tell the difference. Loved Audirvana 3.5 for what it was. A simple one of payment audio player. For subscription then Roon is on another level. Simply there is no comparison.

I don’t know if your quote of ‘it doesn’t work fine for MOST people’ is true. I mean I have no issues with AS playing my music from my library, Tidal, or Qobuz. I play all kinds, from flacs, wav, dsd, mqa, dts, et al. and no problems.

The silent majority.

It’s just that people want an immediate response/solution to their personal problem(s,) then others who also have problems (similar or not) and want an immediate response/solution to their problem(s) and then assume it’s everybody. It’s not.

AS works perfectly well for, local albums just as well as Qobuz streaming, no problems whatsoever. I can’t judge Tidal/MQA, as I gave up Tidal a long time ago.

Yes, there might be tiny quibbles, but for what I am using it, basically listening to local files and Qobuz streaming, AS is up to its task. Even the so often criticized UPnP streaming works flawlessly, as I have my Mac mini 2018 streaming to a Raspberry Pi 4B running RopieeeXL.

Since downloading AS, I compared SQ between AS and Roon ( same setup Mac mini 2018/Raspi 4B RopieeeXL) and I like AS‘ sound better. One thing for sure is that AS has much better bass extension,. That’s the first thing that strikes me when I switch from Roon to AS. The treble in Roon might be a tad smoother, but not by much. Clearly, for me AS‘ sound is more dynamic, pleasant and engaging, while Roon has a bit of nervousness (graininess???) in its sound that becomes disturbing after a while.

Despite Roon’s superior user interface, the sound is more important for me, that’s why I go for Audirvana. Even this far, that I bought a one year subscription today!

But PLEASE, Audirvana team, the remote app is sorely missed, make it available soon!

It’s just the impression I get from reading the forums, maybe the people that have issues are just more vocal than the ones who are happy.
I just know that for myself there are too many issues with AS that get in the way of enjoying the music, with Roon I have no issues, and sound quality I find between the two is virtually identical with all EQ on both turned off.
I’m glad you are having no problems though!!
