DSD 64 files won’t stream: the audio file seems to be streaming (the clock / timer is advancing), but the sound is just static (no intelligible music, no dropped sounds, no clipping). Just static. I tried adjusting the software volume. No luck.

The UPnP / DNLA supported protocols for this device, does not include raw DSD file support… Have you enabled DoP and tried sending the files this way? It looks like the maximum DSD sample-rate this device will play is 2.8MHz (DSD64) via DoP… 176.4kHz is the PCM carrier sample-rate for DSD64 via DoP (DSD over PCM)

Make sure you have the latest firmware installed…

According to the specs (here the user guide) it can play only PCM


I agree the information is conflicting. At the end of the same Quick Start Guide (from which you provided that screen print) is this (see my pic). It does seem to support files up to DSD 128. But I have been able to successfully stream DSD.

I will check with dealer tech support about firmware upgrade and try manufacturer tech support. Agree the information provided regarding DSD file support is conflicting. Thank you.




With DoP enabled… change ‘For bridge devices connected to a DAC’ to ‘No Limit’
and disable ‘Auto-detect MQA devices’

Can you play DSD64 files via the USB bus, with DoP enabled?

Look at the debug report regarding ‘UPnP / DLNA supported protocols :’ You will not see DSD support… and again you will see under 'DLNA 1.5: Yes’ the report shows ‘Can play native DSD: No’.

ML No. 5101 player does not have USB-B for direct connect to laptop / computer. Therefore I am unable to test DoP via USB from Audirvana.

5101 only has USB-A (for use with thumb drive). I have not yet tried USB-A with audio files of any type.

The ESS Pro DAC is PCM-centric and does not provide an unfettered 1-bit PDM signal path to output for DSD… You will never get a pure DSD signal output from this device… I suspect the USB port is where you can play DSD files via an attached storage device… In this case, it would make sense that the system can play DSD128 files as these are converted to multi-bit DSD for output by virtue of this connection to the DAC chipset.

“The 5101 doesn’t support DSD via streaming, only via USB or SACD. Secondly, we would really recommend you check what software you’re on and if you’re not on the latest (v19) then please update.”

In all ESS chipsets the 1-bit PDM (DSD) is converted to multi-bit PCM (DSD-Wide) for output to the D/A circuitry… Technically, all PCM signals handled by ESS chipsets are converted to multi-bit DSD-Wide for D/A conversion.

So it seems custom FPGA (e.g., Chord, PS Audio, DCS Ring DAC) would be able to handle DSD more purely. Or a DAC with dedicated DSD processing (T+A?).

I believe dCS has a pure 1-bit signal path to output… and T+A has a pure 1-bit path…

Well, the lesson learned is that one should read what is written and not what he would like to read

these are specific specs for the described input

and these are general specs and they are right as the device is a SACD player

therefore there isn’t any ambiguity

I have read specs for MANY DAC’s and they are all much more clear about the file formats and resolution supported by each input source (e.g., different resolution supported by digital optical, coax, USB, network, etc.).

What you demonstrated above still does NOT clarify what tech support informed me: DSD files are only supported by USB-A flash drive on this device. So, despite your condescending tone, it is absolutely ambiguous (no where in the documentation does it clearly stipulate that DSD is only via USB-A flash drive).

It is a long thread, but it boils down to the fact that there are more affordable DACs capable of direct DSD as well. A number of DACS with an AKM chip are capable to play DSD without resampling to pcm for instance (when they have the option in the settings to play DSD directly), but there are also other (R2R) solutions (Holo Audio Cyan 2 and others).

The link is HQPlayer centered but gives a lot of information. Various brands and types are measured and mentioned. Hopefully this info is useful to you to find a DAC that suits your needs.

It does not have to cost an arm and a leg. The HOLO Audio Cyan 2 is around $1400, and the Topping DX9 with AKM chip (and direct DSD mode) is around 1300 euro’s. But there are more options if you read the thread.
