IMAC defaults to internal speakers

Just installed Audirvana update 3.5.33. Audirvana preference is set for Playback Designs MPD3 and IMAC recognizes it but playback defaults to internal speakers, not my system. Reset optimizer but to no effect. Problem does not exist with Tidal or Idagio apps. How do I fix this? Following is debug info:

I can’t find this device in your device output, do you have an idea of what is this DAC?

Hi. Appreciate the reply. The debug info now shows the correct preferred device, ie Playback Designs MPD-3. I had the problem of Audirvana defaulting to the internal speakers previously but High Sierra seemed to have fixed that. Problem has returned since I downloaded the latest Audirvana update. Here’s the debug info:

Hello @spesalium, can you check if you don’t have another program that is actually using your DAC as output when you want to play some music in Audirvana?

Hi. Yes, I’ve checked. Audirvana is the only music program I’m running. Itunes is closed–as are
the Tidal & Idagio apps–when the problem occurs. When I open Audirvana & it takes possession of the MPD-3, I hear an audible click from the DAC. Problem is that only happens after numerous tries, and then not consistently. I’ve taken to leaving Audirvana open now that it is connected with my DAC/system but that’s not foolproof, as I’ve found out.

Hi. Just downloaded latest Audirvana update (3.5.34) but problem still persists, ie when I open Audirvana, my imac reverts to internal speakers–even though it recognizes the MPD-3. This is not the case with the Tidal app where I can manually switch from MPD-3 to internal speakers and back. Again, I had this problem previously but it was solved with intervening Audirvana updates. Now, it’s back, coincident with the latest two updates. Any advice on how to solve this frustrating problem welcome. Thanks.

De-installed & re-installed Audirvana. Problem remains–either sound defaults to internal speakers or there is no sound at all through my DAC/system. Issue is the same for MPD-3 and my other two USB DACs. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hello @spesalium, can you make a video of your issue when you open your audio output of Audirvana while you are playing your music? Can you also include the Audio Midi Setup app in the video when you play a file in Audirvana?

Same issue happening to me now. Is there a fix after three and a half years? I’ve tried all the troubleshooting steps in this thread, to no avail.

Do you get this behavior only when you select your HiBy FC3 device?

No. As soon as I click play on Audirvana the output on the iMac switches to either internal speakers or USB dac, which is separate outboard dac for headphone amp. The hiby is an option, but won’t allow me to choose it. Btw, I use the Hiby to run a pair of desktop speakers.

I have the same issue with a Audioquest Dragonfly Black USB dac, as well. Tested on a MacBook Pro, same results.

Have you selected the preferred DAC in Audirvana or in OSX? Audirvana overrules the OSX settings.

I don’t see that you have chosen an external DAC in Audirvana. Then Audirvana does exactly what you ask of him. Use the standard internal output.

Yes. The preferred DAC is Hiby FC3 or Audioquest Dragonfly Black in Audirvana, it doesn’t matter which I choose it still defaults to internal speakers in OSX. This just broke about two weeks ago.

Did something break in relation to “exclusive access” on the last update? This is all I can figure, because the same issue is occuring with Tidal now.

It appears that a couple of Audirvana Studio reinstalls and several system reboots have solved this issue. For how long, I don’t know. Thanks for the suggestions…
