NAS DS218j / DAC / Audirvana Remote

I am using Audirvana legacy for some years on my MAC BOOK - connecting my ASUS DAC to the MB’s USB port.

If I were to change to Audirvana Origin - intend to run it on my Synology DS218j NAS :

  1. Do I connect my DAC to the USB port of the NAS ?
  2. How can I migrate / use my i-tune library of music albums with the new setup ?
  3. Am I able to run the Audirvana Remote APP on my iPad (which I am using with existing setup mentioned) - with this new setup ?

Thanks

Hi @akdracom

This will not work; all the ports of Synology’s NAS don’t support audio over USB

You would need to add the NAS in your Finder and transfer the actual files you have in iTunes into it.

Connect your Mac to shared computers and servers

If your iPad is compatible, you can do so. Go to the App Store to see if the Audirvāna Remote app is compatible with it.

Antonie

Thanks for fast response. Answer to the first question do altered my thinking then.

Maybe let me go through my intent again :

  1. Now I am :

    • Using Apple MacBook running Audirvana Legacy
    • Library in iTune file folder(s)
    • MB USB → ASUS DAC - > Amplifier
    • Control using MB UI or iPad running Audirvana Remote APP
  2. I want to get get my MacBook out of this equation and see that Audirvana has Linux version (Origin) for NAS like Synology

So to pursue my plan - if I get “Origin” and run it on DS218j -

how do I configure / connect the output (to DAC) - without the MB (how ? possible ?) - if NAS USB port can’t be used for connecting to DAC.

and control (using my iPad running Audirvan Remote)

Pardon my questions if not make sense if due to my misunderstanding of the “Origin” version

Thanks
Regards

Hi @akdracom,

In such a case, you have two options:

  1. Change your NAS to go for a QNAP to get the USB support.
  2. To get a UPNP device, you connect to your USB device in USB, and you can use your Synology to output to this UPNP device.

Antoine,

Thanks for the quick response, from your response - changing from Synology to QNAP seems not practical - meaning I would have to uproot my whole NAS setup for using Audirvana Origin.

This triggered me to have following idea / question - because my objective is to take out using Apple MacBook from running Audirvana legacy, I can have alternative of not using NAS, but use a Raspberry (require more setup and skill set to do so)

  1. Raspberry (Runs Pi OS 64 bit) - install Audirvana Origin

  2. Raspberry connect to my existing USB storage of music files

Question is - can I still use my itune song library directly by the Rspberry ?
or I need to do content migration to be usable by Rasp ?

  1. Use Apple iPad running Audirvana Remote - connect to Rapsberry

If this is appropriate - can pursue this further with Origin

Thanks
Regards

Hi @akdracom, you will need to migrate the iTunes file in the Rasp, and then you will be able to sync them directly by the Rasp once you have installed and started Audirvāna Origin on it.

Thanks.

“Migrate” means that I can use all my music files - .AIFF format (ripped from all my own CD’s using iTune / Apple Music) - by moving / copying them to Rasp’s storage - without having to go through the tedious ripping process.

Is this correct understanding ?
Thanks

Exactly

Antonie,

Thanks a lot - would look into Audirvana Origin more closely as a choice.
