Playing DSD through Parasound Halo Integrated

I just acquired a Parasound Halo Integrated amp with a built in DAC. The DAC is supposed to play all resolutions of DSD files, but so far I have not been able to play any.
My previous Amp, a Yamaha A-S801 had no problem playing DSD files using Audirvana.
I also have a stand alone Furutech DAC-ADC which plays all DSD files with Audirvana.
I am using a MacBook Pro running macOs 10.13.6 - Audirvana 3.5.50 - USB - Parasound.
I can’t figure out why DSD will not play through the Parasound unit. The Parasound actually has the DAC chip as my Furutech DAC, so truly mystified here.
Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Have you tried without software volume control enable and selecting DoP 1.1 in Audirvāna settings?

Yes, I have tried that. I tried again just now to be sure and still nothing. When Playing DSD files, if I turn up the volume, all I hear is hiss coming from the speakers and only the very faintest, barely audible, sound of the track I am trying to play.

I have attached a screen shot comparing Midi settings of the Parasound amp (does not play DSD) and my ADL Stratos DAC (plays DSD perfect). I have circled some differences between the two units. Hopefully this will give some insight as to why Audirvana will not play DSD through the Parasound. To me, it looks like it has something to do with the master volume, but I do not know how to correct that.

You are showing zero (0) IN for the Parasound as the Output Device in Audio MIDI Setup and the Clock Source as the Default clock… There is no Volume control for DSD signals unless they are converted to multi-bit DSD-Wide (PCM) and converted back to 1-bit PDM (DSD)… It seems the Parasound is not configured properly.

I will point you to the User Manual (That’s where I would need to go… ) Otherwise, since it is connected via USB, make sure the settings for that input are configured properly.
Audirvana is getting its information about the connected DAC from the Audio MIDI Setup.

So here are the instructions from the Parasound Halo User Manual.
Very basic stuff.
I have no idea how to re-configure the default clock source and/or the zero (0) IN for the Parasound as the output device.
There is obviously a compatability issue between the Parasound and MacOs or Audirvana.

For a Mac® with OS X
Apple®
computers do not require the installation of drivers to use the USB input. Connect the USB
cable (included in the Halo Integrated carton) to your Mac computer and then turn on the Halo
Integrated. Next you will need to ensure that the Halo Integrated is selected as the computer’s
default audio output device. Follow these instructions to assign the Halo Integrated as the default
audio device:

  1. Go to the Apple menu
  2. Select “System Preferences”
  3. Select “Sound” from the Hardware menu
  4. Select the “Output” tab
  5. Select “PARASOUND - Digital Audio” in the Sounds menu
  6. Close the Sounds menu
    Playing Music from your Computer
    Once initial setup is complete your Halo Integrated will be ready for use with your PC or Mac.
    Press the USB button on the Halo Integrated’s remote control or rotate the Halo Integrated’s Input
    select knob until the blue USB indicator is illuminated. Simply start playing any music on your
    computer and it will be sent to the Halo Integrated via the USB cable. Any sound that you would
    normally hear through your computer speakers will be heard through the Halo Integrated and your
    accompanying audio system.
    Note: For the highest quality sound playback we recommend leaving the computer application’s
    volume control at 100%. Then use the volume control on your Halo Integrated to set the
    listening level.

The Sound prefs are not the same as Audio MIDI Setup… However, if you cannot get sound output via the test function of macOS then this would allude to a problem with the USB interface of the Parasound… If you are using the same USB cable that was utilized with the ADL DAC, this reinforces the question regarding the Parasound USB port… You already know that Audirvana is delivering DSD signals to the USB bus of the Mac, because the ADL is functioning as expected.

The Parasound supports DSD signals to 5.6MHz (DSD128) via DoP1.1 on macOS via USB… The cable should be less than six-feet (6’) in length…

Note: For the highest quality sound playback we recommend leaving the computer application’s volume control at 100%. Then use the volume control on your HINT 6 to set the listening level.

Check your "Theater Bypass / Amp Input setting…

*The last option is to reset the Parasound to defaults…

I also suggest lowering your playback pre-load memory allocation to 4GB… You are allocating nearly 100% of your System RAM for playback pre-load.

I did suspect the USB port could be an issue, but I guess will find out when cables are switched.
I have no idea how to reset the Parasound to defaults.

When you reconnect the Parasound, turn it off and shut-down the Mac, restart the Mac… when the computer is booted, turn on the Parasound and when it is ready to go, then launch Audirvana… :wink:

I switched USB cable and lowered pre-load memory.
Followed your start up procedure but unfortunately there has been no change.

Make sure the Parasound firmware is up to date… Or maybe got corrupted and needs reinstallation?
