Problem playing MQA files across private network

Greetings everyone

I’m a new user of Audirvana and this is a first post.

I have recently purchased Audirvana, and I’ve installed on my main PC, an HP Pavilion PC-570. Version 3.5.38. I am using it to stream to a network player ‘SoTM sms200 Ultra Neo’ then on to a Chord Qutest Dac(non MQA). It all works fine until I try playing a MQA file. The file loads, starts to play for a few seconds but then breaks down to just hissing sound. A dump file seems to be created sometimes.

The SoTM is configured for MPD & DLNA playback and everything plays apart from MQA files which break down after a few seconds. The processor type is AMD A10-9700 and the memory size is 8Gb. Windows 10 64bit, version 1909

The reason I mention the processor is that when I plug a laptop running Audirvana, into the same network hub, play exactly the same files to the SoTM streamer, everything plays ok, including MQA files.

The SoTM config is the same in the above comparison. The laptop though is an Intel Core i7-6500 also with 8Gb ram. Same Windows 10 version and build as the desktop. In both cases the Audirvana config for the SoTM sms200 Ultra Neo, is the same on both PC and Laptop.

If I play the same files using ‘Roon’, the MQA versions of the files play ok, on both PC Desktop, and Laptop. This requires reconfiguring the SoTM to be a Roon endpoint. This is annoying because I bought Audirvana so I would not have to pay the continuing cost of Roon, Audirvana also sounds better.

Is there anything you can suggest which might be the problem? I don’t think it can be network related as the broadband speed is over 100Mbs and my laptop works fine when playing on the same network segment.

I would appreciate any help

Check the MQA setting on the system where you have the issue. Paste the debug info here while playing the file.

Hi, thanks for the reply. Although I still have the problem the system is not actually crashing, therefore no dump file. If I can get it to produce one I’ll send it over. Do I have to set windows 10 to save dump files automatically? as the message appears very briefly before Audirvana crashes At the moment it is not crashing. I’ve tried completely copying the Audirvana setup from my laptop onto the desktop as follows.
Max PCM Rate 192 khz
Max PCM bit Depth 24 bit
Max DSD DSD128

Auto detect MQA = on
Dac not detected as MQA, use as = Not MQA

Max memory for tracks preload 3172
Mute during sample rate change off

For bridge devices connected to a dac

Max sample rate = no limit
Add latency = none

PC is quite old, maybe the noise floor is a bit high for MQA.

Nope, can’t be that. Your DAC doesn’t even support MQA.

Disable MQA autodetect and also upsampling if you have that enabled.

You can get the debug info from the app menu.

Upsampling disabled. Debug info.

This debug is after ensuring upsampling is off and disabling auto detect of MQA. Crashes witha lot of hiss about 6 seconds into the file.

Additional info, files play perfectly through a local connection using my OPPO HA-2 headphone dac from USB.

This could very well be a performance issue, since Audirvana needs to unfold the MQA file.

Can you try to set as MQA decoder and try again? The file will not be unfolded and thus there will be no additional load on the processor.

Ok…Looking Good…Sounding good…Wow, you’ve fixed it!

Allow me to be impressed. Tried several MQA files and all play perfectly. Well done, thank you very much.

One Question The AMD processor in my desktop is the A10-9700 which is later than that in my laptop. What would cause the performance issue?
I noted that after I set the parameter to MQA decoder, the initial read of the files was much faster.

Anyway, you’ve cured the problem, many thanks.

Well, it’s only half cured. You don’t get the benefits of MQA by setting it to MQA decoder, since your DAC is not that. It would be good to have Audirvana do the 1st unfold.

The reason is that A10 was a lame processor, performing especially poorly with media processing loads.

Yes I realised that I’d lost the benefit of Higher Res. I can use my laptop for now, that doesn’t have any problems playing MQA. Will either get a better desktop PC or an MQA dac. Thanks for all your help.

No prob. Qutest is a great DAC, I would stick to it.

I now have a dilemma as I either have to buy a new PC or continue using Roon, which negates completely the benefit of Audirvana. I, mean, I cannot be the only person in the world wanting to play MQA files over a network, using an AMD A10 processor PC???

But, good news follows. I have done further testing using the same settings on my SOtM sMS200 streamer when using Roon. Roon does the initial decode fine and the file gets played by the streamer and Qutest dac without breaking down. The default settings for the SOtM for MQA is as renderer only. I cannot set it as non MQA.

So, I thought, let’s try setting the SOtM sMS streamer to MQA renderer only in the Audirvana settings. Lo and behold, this works. I get the hi-res stream and it doesn’t break down. I left the auto-detect MQA setting on, but I tried it both ways and as long as the dac settings were set to MQA renderer everything is fine.

Great news for me as I don’t now have to bear the expense of either a new PC or continuing with Roon subscription.

Hope this info helps in Audirvana knowledge base.

All the best

Chris  :heavy_check_mark:

This might work but there could be a negative impact on sound quality. Keep it on MQA decoder until you get better PC. You’re better off with flac undecoded MQA file.

Ok, the PC is fairly old, was looking to get a NUC as well.

Interestingly I have an OPPO HA-2 headphone Dac. I have now loaded the driver for that into this same PC, set it up in Audirvana as ‘not MQA’. This plays without any problems whatever. I get the 24/88.2 stream and it doesn’t break down at all. Obviously there is a major difference in that I am plugging it into the PC’s USB port so not a strict comparison, but the processor seems able to process the decode and on to USB without breaking down, so I don’t quite understand where the problem is.

Trouble is I am a retired mainframe computer and network engineer and I’ve reverted to troubleshooting mode, can’t help it. I’m not completely au fait about PC architecture but curiosity is getting the better of me.

Actually, forget last post. It’s still failing when I play over the network, though less often. Looks like new PC it’ll have to be.

Get a used Macbook or Macmini from 2014 onwards and you can play what you want and have no longer any problems with a PC . Audirvana, Roon , you name it .

Hi, thanks for the suggestion, no doubt it will work. I have a laptop with an intel i7 processor which works fine, don’t think I’ll be switching to Apple anything. It’s apparently an issue with the AMD A10 processor which cannot unpack the MQA file and then send it over the network. Strange conclusion as it can unpack the MQA file and send it to local USB ok. I’ve just given up using Audirvana over the network as I can’t afford a new PC right now. I’ve found a better solution anyway as I am using an SOtM sms200 Ultra Neo streamer which I can configure as Logitech Media player. Paid a couple of quid for ‘Squeeze Control’ from windows store and this works far better, great sound, support for Tidal, Quobuz and Spotify plus access to all my library. Plays everything across the network without issue, on my lowly AMD A10!. But, thanks for the interest and suggestion.
