Subjective Impressions of Sound Quality - Audirvana Studio on Linux

I have Audirvana Studio for Mac OS on a MacMini late 2012 i7 and control it with Audirvana on iPad. ùMy DAC is an Atoll, which Audirvana recognizes in UPnP without direct connection. I would get some benefit from using Audirvana Studio Linux?

Got a reply from Alvin!

Great to hear from you!

I’m Alvin, the owner of Vinshine Audio, co-founder of Beatechnik. Thanks for showing interest in our products. We are studying the possibility to install Audirvana in the RPI and use it without bugs/issues. If it is ever possible, we will bring in the RPI for sale.

So as I understand, it really is an LHY product, but currently only sold on Aliexpress and not through official channels.

This would suggest to me that the item most certainly ISN’T an official LHY product.
Did you send Alvin an image of the product in question?
Not trying to p*ss on your parade, but I’d be extremely cautious if I were you.

There is a difference in sound, which depends on the LinuX OS version used and the hardware used. It works I can tell you, Linux OS recognises the Atoll DAC through USB.
Linux OS on the Mac could bring improvement, if and only if it is an optimised Linux version used for nothing else but working as an Audirvana music server.

But to put it in perspective: I think adding a DDC, like a Mutec3+ USB in between the current Mac and the Atoll has a fa greater impact.

But you can try. A Raspberry Pi4 can be bought (second hand) for a few Euros and it might be worth to try out.

I’ve compared a MacBook M1Pro and a Raspberry Pi4 with DietPi OS extensively. Somewhere up in this topic.

Good to verify. Alvin is very trustworthy.

Thank you very much.
I’ve got a Raspberry PI 4 with 4 GB RAM

On the subject of LHY products… One of the most important components in a system where the DAC input is USB…

Thank you again.
How does this last one work with my Atoll?

And Audirvana? How is it work? Interface? May I use plugins, upsampling and …?

My Atoll haven’t usb port

Everything you can as with Audirvāna on Windows or Mac, except for some plugins that don’t work with the Linux version.

Just browse this forum, there are some topics about it.

Audirvana Raspberry does the same?

So this kit’s legit then?

Not entirely sure why I posted this, as it’s apparent the OP WANT’S it to be legit. Even though it’s not advertised on the official site, and the communication suggests that it may be available at some point in the future

Anyone want to buy a bridge?

Not necessarily. I did ask Alvin in a follow up email whether the product was legit and whether it’s safe to buy from Aliexpress, waiting for his reply.

There is always an option to get the Holo Red, which is a PI4 based streamer with linear PSU and top measurements. But it’s double the price.

I am inclined to think it’s in some sort of a development stage, maybe they are testing the market via Aliexpress. We’ll see. Judging by LHY’s prior success’s with excellent performing units at a fair price, no reason to think it will be a bad unit. The PSU section is probably good (pretty similar to the ones they use in their switches), the case is almost identical to the one used in their SW6 switch, and the OCXO clock is probably the same one they use in their other products.

I don’t think you can put any random OS on the Holo Red, it seems to run its own bespoke software.

Yes, you can. Not really random, but Moode, RoPieeeXL and Volumio are all supported. Probably others as well.

I suppose the question would be, both for the Ali Express unit and the Holo Red, whether you have confidence you would have sufficient time to see if you are happy with the sound, and if not, whether you can conveniently return it for a refund.

I intend to start doing comparisons after I get back from vacation.

RPI4 vs. RPI4 with linear PSU vs. Synology NAS vs. Synology NAS with linear PSU vs. PC. If I detect any improvements of one against the other, I will explore further.

Perhaps my theory of having a DLNA server with good linear PSU and a good clock inside does not make sense at all. Only one way to find out
