Subjective Impressions of Sound Quality - Audirvana Studio on Linux

Understood… :sunglasses::+1:

I intend to sell it and have it added to the list of Audirvana products that goes along with an extended trial version.

Any more details?

Ok, as per recommendation of some users here, I got a trial license for Gentooplayer on RPI4.

I tested Minimserver (controlled via the excellent JPlay app which is head and shoulders above Audirvāna remote) vs. Audirvāna itself, both installed on GP, with all other things and processes disabled. I tested playing from RAM as well, works good too.

I have to say, I was hoping a regular UPnP server controlled by a phone app would be “good enough”, but Audirvāna simply sounds better and there’s no denying it. The sounds is fuller, the midrange is richer and the entire scene is calmer while being more energetic when the track demands it. Hard to describe really. I don’t what fairy dust Audirvāna designers spilled over their software, but it sounds amazing.

The Audirvāna remote however leaves a lot to be desired, the library browsing is slow and not really satisfying, and the entire user experience needs to be upped. Take cues from JPlay! I know they copied Roon (rather shamelessly), but the app looks great, browsing is a breeze, there’s lots of info (like in Roon), it’s lightning fast and it simply works without any hiccups.

Could this be related to the anemic System RAM of the RPI4 platform? Would a headless video accelerator help the platform by removing the video management from the CPU only and onto the graphics sub-system processing?

You confirmed what a lot of people hear. Whatever the magic sauce is, it is magic.

Regarding the JPlay app: it is nice, but almost as expensive as Audirvana is. Some other control apps combined with Minim are as smooth working and a lot cheaper or even free. It is the Audirvana remote app that stands out negatively in this respect, but it is a lot more responsive and freezes a lot less with more powerful hardware when using Audirvana Core. Not as smooth as JPlay, but the hardware the Core software runs on makes a difference.

Yeah, it could very much be the case.

Yes, that will be the other case scenario to try out. I have a NUC7i5BNH lying around somewhere, and while it’s not really an epitome of a powerful machine, it should be much more potent than a RPI4.

Be prepared for quite a different experience in the sound output  The app is still not on JCat responsiveness levels. Don’t forget that the Audirvana app is a remote for the server software and the JCat app is the server. It also buffers the library on the phone of a UPnP server, where Audirvana mirrors the one on the server. That makes quite a difference!

If you’re referring to JPlay for iOS then it’s not a server at all, it’s just a control point app.
It’s true that it loads an internal db with metadata received from Minimserver, but it just about metadata, anyway it can browse directly Minimserver using by folder menu entry.

hello my name is Ton from the Netherlands.
I read with interest your input about audirvana on the rpi5 with gentooplayer.
I have a Magna Mano Ultra streamer which has now been upgraded to the RPI5.
I also use gentooplayer but in combination with roon rock.
I had good experiences with Audirvana in the past and now that they have Linux I want to use it again with Gentooplayer.
I have configured it completely, but unfortunately it doesn’t want to play.
I use the hifiberry digi +pro output in gentoo.
May I ask if you use it too? maybe that’s the problem.
With regards Ton

Have you asked the guy that develops Gentoo Player?

yes, this indicated that there was probably a setting within Audirvana that was not set correctly, but I have no idea what that should be…

I’m sorry : I currently do not use Audirvana Linux because of the number of bugs.
My setup is currently Diretta Target on GP on Holo Red, Diretta Host on GP on RPI5 with aprenderer or mpd/upmdcli or gmediarender, and Audirvana Windows wich call the Host via UPnP. Sound is currently better on my system and far more stable.
If you do not want a dedicated Host, you can test Diretta on 16/44 it’s free and have a Target on your RPI5, and call it via a PC with Audirvana and Asio Diretta Driver. But I won’t explain you how using correctly Audirvana Linux : in my setup it is not stable at all.

Thank you for your clear answer.
My current setup is Roon Rock/Magna Mano ultra mk3 pi5/Gentooplayer
Used audirvana in the past on a Windows PC, it sounded good, but I don’t think Windows is stable enough due to updates, etc., hence the switch to Rock, which is very stable.
I am very limited in the time I can spend listening, so I don’t want any more hassle with refusing equipment and I want to keep it simple with as few devices as possible.
But because my Roon license is expiring and there is now Audirvana Linux, I thought I’d give it a chance.
If I listen to you like that, I’d better stay with Roon.
I also read that you wrote about different kernels, which I also find very interesting.
Thanks and kind regards,
Ton

That’s just one opinion in a rather non standard setup. I have been testing Audirvana Core on three different machines, with a different Linux OS, and one of the machines is an RPi4. I don’t recognise the instability problems.

There are more people using gentoo player. If I was you, I’d search this forum, since you are posting your question in a very different topic and I guess it will not be seen by other gentoo player users.

My apologies at the beginning of this note that I cannot give advice about your particular situation, because I am not using gentooplayer/Diretta or a Pi.

I just wanted to say that I am running Audirvāna on Windows, MacOS, and 4 different Linux distributions, and it is absolutely rock solid on all of them (and sounds wonderful also). There are also quite a few people on the forum here happily using Audirvāna with the Pi (including someone who is making a marketable product on this basis), so I just have a feeling, though no hard information, that it is not a hardware problem.

I don’t know whether Audirvāna is always buggy with gentooplayer and Diretta. I think the advice here to see whether other forum members or the developer of gentooplayer can help you further regarding that specific topic is good. Of course it is understandable if that is more time and trouble than is convenient for you.

Kindly thank you for your very helpful comments.

My past experience with audirvana is that it sounded very good.

The instability I was aiming for was the Windows PC it was running on.

Windows always does its own thing and just when you want to listen, it turns out that you can restart everything. Very annoying.

Now that audirvana is integrated into Gentooplayer, I saw it as a great opportunity for a new acquaintance.

Unfortunately audirvana didn’t want to play anything but I’m definitely going to make another attempt don’t give up yet…

I tested yesterday, seems issue with kernel 6.9 use default kernel 6.6
It run ok with 6.6 but 6.9 seems corrupt something…
All seems ok with 6.6 and just after go to 6.9 breaking the stability at all.
I will reflash a version on 6.6 and stay in 6.6 to see if it remains stable on long time.
Audiolinux stay on 6.6 kernel, it could be a wise response to some instability of recent kernel RPI…
You should try with 6.6…
On Audirvana linux have you set the correct config ?
Do you see the output in your home system info ?
Do you see the output in Audirvana config ?
GP has TEST Kernel 6.7, 6.8 and 6.9 but they could have issues vs official 6.6 tested kernel

Hello,
I plan to build some solution like yours for better SQ. I got metrum ambre with RPI4B and gentoo player.
I have a NUC which is running ROCK ROON and got Nordost Qsource LPS. (Prefer ROON UI and album recognition ability than audirvana)
Is it possible to have an independent RPI5 running for diretta host and Roon call the host?
Or I has to load windows on NUC to run audiravana?

Not about Audirvana : response here
