TEAC HR can read DSF without DOP on mac, any hope for Audirvana?

Hello,

I’m using a TEAC UD-503 and I upsample everything to DSD 128 with very good results. It’s the max I can do with DOP, the max of the dac is DSD 256 that I can get booting my mac mini on windows. But I prefer the sound of MacOS.

I’ve tried TEAC-HR and surprise… It can read 256 DSF file on a my mac.
The file is 256, the TEAC show DSD 11.2M
Have they made a kind of ASIO for mac ?
Perhaps Damien Plisson can communicate with TEAC to integrate this tech ?

Can other TEAC DAC users confirm this ? Catalina 10.15.7 mac mini server 2012

Have you selected dop 1.1 in the settings of Audirvana?

Yes, DOP 1.1, but ther is no choice “No DOP” I can choose to test.

dop 1.0 can go to dsd128
dop 1.1 can go dsd256 on Mac
dop only on Mac…
maybe that TEAC HR have found something for Mac’s :slight_smile:

… but if your DAC can do DSD256… it should works with DOP 1.1
you unplug everything, did a restart of all?

Thank’s for your help. I’ve made another test : reading 32/705, and that doesn’t work either, The dac detect 352 one second and …nothing. I put in bold differences playing or stop. Is it normal that the frequency is the half when not playing ? Local audio engine can be something else than core audio ?

Why does it matter? DSD over PCM (DoP) is a technology that transmits 1-bit PDM signal via a PCM file packetizing scheme… No data loss… The DoP processor of your DAC extracts the 1-bit PDM signal and presents it to the output circuitry…

In the context of your DAC, it supports an unfettered 1-bit PDM signal-path from the DoP extraction to output… there is no difference between a raw native 1-bit PDM (DSD) signal and the 1-bit PDM signal extracted from the DoP carrier.

Ethernet UPnP transmission from a Mac platform will deliver native 1-bit DSD signals to a DAC.

IF you are upsampling (modulating) PCM to DSD in r8Brain you must set it to “DSD” and choose the target DSD sample-rate.

If you are just playing a .dsf file, r8Brain and any other DSP is bypassed. and will be delivered as a DoP signal.

Reduce your playback pre-load memory allocation to 4GB you are allocating 13GB of your 16GB System Memory for playback buffering…

Shut down Audirvana, shut-down your computer and DAC… restart your computer, then the DAC, wait for them to connect and stabilize… Make sure your TEAC is selected as the audio output device in Audio MIDI Setup… and launch Audirvana…

No reason to limit the bit-depth to 24bits… and don’t run a virtual machine… No drivers needed on macOS… Turn-off ‘Polarity Inversion’

Okay this is your problem with DSD256 via DoP 1.1… The UD-503 USB input supports up to 384kHz or in the context of DoP transmission up to 352.8kHz which is the PCM carrier sample-rate for DSD128 (5.6MHz)… You cannot play DSD256 via USB (native or DoP) from a macOS platform… However, you can play native 1-bit PDM DSD256 via Ethernet UPnP transmission… The TEAC HR player is bound by the same USB restrictions… apparently you were using a Windows virtual machine when playing the DSD256 file.

Note: To play 11.2MHz DSD256 files via DoP 1.1 on the USB bus, the UD-503 would need to support the PCM carrier sample-rate of 705.6kHz.

Thank you. OK, the data overhead that DOP need (well explain in your link on the DOP 1.1 spec signed by D.Plisson) to build the container make that you always are a step under transport rate.

That’s why when I play, with my mac and TEAC HR a 256 DSF file, it proof that TEAC HR isn’t using DOP.

So in the task manager I’ve made a sample of the code used by TEAC HR on the mac and they use “ITFAudioToolkit”, a free code made to manipulate DSD bypassing CoreAudio Apple code. here is an extract, I can send the all file to your R&D of course :slight_smile:

I play both native and DoP 1.1 DSD files to 5.6MHz via USB to my TEAC UD-501… I modulate (up-sample) all PCM files to DSD128 (5.6MHz) in r8Brain. I convert binaural DSD256 to DSD128… Since I am headphone-centric, I convert stereo DSD to DXD (24/352.8kHz) where I apply HRTF DSP (112dB Redline Monitor) and subsequently modulate to 5.6MHz…

The idea that packetizing DoP signals influence the 1-bit PDM signal embedded in the PCM carrier is misinformed… Both r8Brain or Sox packetize the DoP framework and the DoP de-embedding processor of the DAC do this adroitly and delivers the 1-bit PDM stream intact to the output circuitry…

This requires that you install the ITF-USB DSD protocol driver as this is a proprietary handshake between the USB bus controller and the UD-503 with the symbiotic ITF-USB DSD protocol hardware/firmware support.

You are worried about CPU overhead… This does not reduce overhead…

You can utilize a streamer/DDC to provide the native DSD256 via USB to the UD-503…

My perspective on DSD256 is that you will be hard pressed, at best, to discern tangible contextual nuances between a recording done at 5.6MHz versus a recording done at 11.2MHz on your system… Even if you decimate the 11.2MHz file to 5.6MHz for playback via DoP 1.1.

If you want to play DSD256 files just use the TEAC HR player…

There is no benefit for Audirvāna to pay for a software driver to support some older DAC’s that don’t support 11.2MHz DoP files via USB…

  • Bulk PET protocol requires the symbiotic DAC platform support.

** Suggestion: Down-convert your DSD256 files to DSD128… your enjoyment of the artistry and production will not be diminished, except for the cognitive-bias you may hold and you then can seamlessly jump between format/sample-rates.
