UPnP device: Can't fast forward or rewind in a track

Thank you for the new 10-day test. First of all, I am very happy with the new Linux version, headless Studio. In my case, jumping forward or back to the next or previous title works now in a stable manner, even for my UPnP-device with te latest version.

But
I am still interested in this topic; skimming through tracks
For reference see here

Rewinding forward or backward through a track still does not work with a docked UnPn device (Yamaha R-N2000A).

This user actually reports something the same mistake (Marantz)

I am of the opinion that it is due to the Audirvana code, because the well-known MUSICCAST app from Yamaha enables exactly this feature without complaint.
Overall, however, Audirvana with all its features is even more attractive in the end. Therefore, it would be a great wish that you take a closer look here, Antoine

There is no standardization of UPnP protocol that Audirvāna can depend upon as implemented by any given DAC platform implementation… MUSICAST is a proprietary communication protocol used in the Yamaha ecosystem, how they (Yamaha) interpret and implement UPnP protocol is not the responsibility of Audirvāna… There can be a level of cooperation, however, it is up to Yamaha to adapt, not Audirvāna.

Hmm… As a point of reference… While it does not seem like you can “fast forward”, aka speed up the playback, you can place the cursor on the buffered track and continue play from that position forward… At least on my MacBook Pro and Lumin Streamer (UPnP device)…

Yes, I know the argument doesn’t meet the standard, is proprietary from the earlier conversation here. I can’t dismiss your argument out of hand.
The complexity is also that UPnP comprises a whole suite of (standardized) protocols. If you look at the specifications at the OCF, they were created around the years 2011-2012.
e.g. https://upnp.org/specs/dm/UPnP-dm-BasicManagement-v2-Service.pdf

The device manufacturers should probably be certified here, to consider the UPnP conformity for certain devices https://openconnectivity.org/certification/upnp-certification/

The Marantz device mentioned (Dazza) in the text above probably does not (yet) work either, so it must have been implemented “proprietarily”. After all, such devices are heavyweights on the market in their price range.

At least in my configuration the function of jumping to the previous/next track has been significantly improved in the new version (above). This shows that there has been a ‘convergence’ …

Thank you for your advice:
Yes, exactly this nice feature is not working right now, the slider always jumps back to the beginning of the title.

Hi @hungryfish,

In UPNP, this is called “seek,” and the endpoint needs to support it to work on Audirvāna.

To check if the seek will work in Audirvāna with your device, use the app on your device and play a WAV file. If you can seek into the current track, then it will work in Audirvāna. If not, the device implementation lacks seek over WAV, or the seek with WAV files is bugged.

Hi Antoine,
I can confirm that seek does not work properly on a wav file (local on NAS).
The slider jumps back to its starting position as usual.
on Linux:
file /Volumes/Multimedia/Music/Intermede-Fantasque-et-leger_14.wav
/Volumes/Multimedia/Music/Intermede-Fantasque-et-leger_14.wav: RIFF (little-endian) data, WAVE audio

Those tracks have been played from the Musicast app?

Yes, exactly as you specified inside Audirvana (Local). I must have received the file itself from your team for such a test back then, but I couldn’t play it in 2023 because I didn’t have a NAS system at the time.
