5.1 song not working on Mac mini M1 with Audirvana

I replaced a 2014 Mac mini with a new one with Apple Silicon (M1) processor. Audirvana run, but it doesn’t properly detect my Marantz AV receiver that’s connected via HDMI. It want to treat it as a 24-bit 768KHz device, but (according to Audio-MIDI-Setup and past experience) it only supports 48KHz.
The result is that during playback I hear something, but not the actual music,

Here’s the debug output:

You should try bit perfect playing first by turning off upsampling and see…

Thanks for the suggestion, it worked! But apparently only for stereo files. When I try to play a 5.1 FLAC file that used to work with the old Mac mini, it still only gives strange sounds. Anything else I can try on my end?

Have you tried a multi channel file not in your iTunes folder… copy it to desktop and add it to Audirvana to see if it is a bug with iTunes now

Debug says 10.16 as macOS ? Catalina last?
Or Big Sur?

It’s Big Sur, it will be fixed in the next update of Audirvana for MacOS.

That’s good to know, thanks!

I was talking about the versioning of MacOS in the debug info, not for your case. Have you take a look at your Audio Midi Setup settings? Does it still see your Denon in 5.1? If it’s the case, can you try to pay a track form iTunes wiht your Denon?

Oh, thanks for clearing up my misunderstanding. Playback from Music.app works fine. The 5.1 setup in Audio-MIDI-Setup works, i.e. when I play the test sounds they come from the correct speakers. I have also successfully played Dolby Digital surround sound from the Apple TV app, and from Plex Media Player.
So far the only application with issues is Audirvana.

Can you try to play a 5.1 song in Audirvana with your Marantz selected in Audirvana and post your debug info again?

There is actually some issue with MacOS Big Sur and this can be one of these. Apple may have done a fix for iTunes but not for software that use CoreAudio. As soon as they release an update for Big Sur, make sure to install it and try to play your file again.

Thanks for the info. Do you have a Radar open with Apple for this issue?

I installed macOS 11.1, but that didn’t make a difference.

Hello @hagedose,

We have made an update today of Audirvana with a a optimized version for M1. Can you install it and see if you still have the same issue?

The issue remains, but I learned more details. Surround files with a 48 kHz sampling rate play just fine, as do DSD64 files. All the files that don’t play correctly are 24 bit 96 kHz FLAC files. Does that help?

We tried to play a track using multichannel in the Apple Transition Kit in Audio Midi Setup like you and we had the same issue. This thus means it’s a Big Sur bug that need to be solved.

FWIW, the same files play fine when I play them with VLC. So it’s probably more accurate to say that there is a problem with the way Audirvana plays audio and Big Sur on M1 Macs. I’m pretty sure the files played fine under Big Sur on my old Intel Mac mini.
Anyway, have you filed a bug report with Apple?
