Adding music from network drives stalls/hangs - doesn't "see" all music/folders

Debug information below. I have upgraded to Catalina (on a 2012 Macbook Pro), but I had the exact same problem with Mojave as well. I have two network drives that I want to add music (mostly .aiff, some .dsf and .flac), but when I sync both drives, neither one completes successfully. Sometimes the update stalls, sometimes it completes…but doesn’t find all the music files on the drive. Both drives are accessible on the network and JRiver has no trouble whatsoever finding all the music files.

I have tried all the database maintenance options, I have opened/closed Audirvana, powered off/on the Macbook, nothing seems to work. Right now Audirvana is giving me the “Starting Synching Drive X” message, but it does not progress in finding new files.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thank you in advance, -dGB

I am using the demo version to evaluate whether to purchase Audirvana. Right now I can only see about 1/4 of my music (large collection on two hard drives). The demo version is not limited in any way, is it?

Update (10/12): I have tried reinstalling Audirvana, I have deleted the database file, rebooted my Mac – problem still persists. At this point, Audirvana hangs completely and won’t add files from one of the hard drives. Any suggestions would be most appreciated.

Thank you, -dGB

When you force to quit Audirvana you will have a window which appears with a report in it. Can you send us this report in a private message or in response here?

I was able to load a single file from my hard drive into Audirvana (one album). Then I tried the following:

  1. When I try to load the entire hard drive (thousands of subfolders), that’s when this hangs.

  2. When I add a few folders to synch, it also works fine.

  3. I tried adding about 100 subfolders (my music is organized by artist, with one folder per artist), it also hangs (report below). This is a number of subfolders but not an huge amount of music.

  4. When I try to synch just one large folder — Compilations (which has many hundreds of subfolders in it) — it hangs.

So I think I know how I am making Audrivana crash….but not why.

  1. My music hard drives are enormous — 8TB and 10TB respectively.

  2. Asking Audirvana to synch the entire hard drive, or even a large number of folders (or one very large folder) causes it to hang.

  3. My guess on the source of the issue is that Audirvana is trying to do something like bring the entire folder structure into memory……or process the entire thing at once, and thus is runs into system limitations and can’t continue (hangs). It is possible that Audirvana is not processing the files piecemeal and then moving on to the next, so a large synch task never completes. This may or may not be the reason, but it is certainly is consistent with what I have been seeing.

Best regards, -dGB

Sounds indeed like it! I have seen other music software not being great at handling lengthy file paths beyond xxx characters… so the more sub folders levels you have, higher chances are it will cause a problem. This is super hard to rootcause at first because it has a random behavior apparently, since 2 tracks within a same album can make the difference with their title length. Spent a saturday afternoon debugging this!!! Hope it helps and maybe A hits that problem too…

One of the folder you are trying to synchronize probably have a corrupted file in it that cause the crash of Audirvana. Can you try to just synchronize your first drive alone and do the same for your second one to see where is located the corrupted file?
