Album Artist Tag and multiple artists

I have the library well tagged with the album artist names. However Audirvana Origin does not identify the albums of an artist when that tag is shared by for example two artists. So, if I search, or add Mats Gustafsson to my favorite artists, only the albums with the solo tag of Mats Gustafsson appear, but not the album that says “Mats Gustafsson, Andreas Reysum” or “Mats Gustafsson & Andreas Reysum”. I would like this to be fixed. The ID3 tag manual states that artist names can be differentiated by commas so that they can be identified individually. Other music players can do it and it would be a great satisfaction for many users who want to organize their collections as faithfully as possible to explore the discographies.

In Audirvana the separator should be semicolon “;” or triple semicolon “;;;” (… don’t remember exactly as now I use Yate to write tags)

Therefore, this generates chaos if most people use commas. I would simply ask that they make a small change and support the commas that are used by most tagging apps.

There is basically no golden standard in tagging. All the major tagging programs I use (MusicBrainz Picard, Mp3tag, XRecode etc.) use the semicolon ‘;’ as default.

Also Foobar, Musicbee, Plex, Roon, Qobuz, Tidal and lots of other music players and streaming platforms use ‘;’ as a default. I agree with you that it would be nice if that could be changed in the settings (as some programs allow).

You could put a feature request in this forum in the category ‘User Voice’. There people can vote for it.

Basically in music tagging the chaos is already complete :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:, because the ‘standards’ are lacking overall. For instance: The ID3tag standard is only the tagging standard for MP3 files. In flac files, the ‘Vorbis tags’ format is used where the semicolon ‘;’ is a more commonly used standard. I therefore highly doubt that most people use comma’s.

Even the tagging by ‘professionals’ in Roon vs Qobuz vs Tidal etc. is not consequent and differ from each other (but, as far as I know, they all use a semicolon as divider, since most of those files are flac files).
Lots of people are inconsequent in filling ‘Artist’ vs ‘Album Artist’ vs ‘Performer’. In classical music the chaos is much worse with album titles, composers, genres etc. etc. and that is only the tip of the iceberg. In short: The chaos is already complete. We all try to make the best of it in our own music libraries

There is no central comittee overseeing and punishing taggers if they tag wrong .

I don’t know what the purpose of your message is. All streaming platforms use commas. Most people use commas (if you use Soulseek you will know this very well). Semicolons are used by almost no one. I’m not going to take votes, it’s a case of supporting the majority usage by customers. If your library is a mess it is no example and no help. Thank you.

Don’t confuse a P2P network as Soulseek with ‘most people’. If I buy (and download) flac and dsf files from Qobuz, HDtracks, etc. all multiple artists, performers etc. are sometimes separated by semicolons, but (mostly) multiple tags are used. Also the tagging and player programs I mentioned (Foobar, MusicBrainz Picard, Mp3tag etc.) use mostly the semicolon as default when importing music files. The ‘Vorbis tag standard’ used for flac files also defaults to the semicolon. That was my message. Hardly ‘almost no one’.

But hey, you do you, I was just trying to convey (in a friendly and respectful way I might add) that there is an enormous lack of standards in music tagging and that your way is not everyone’s way.

I am already a forum member for a couple of years and I have not as yet encountered a ‘majority of customers’ on this forum asking for this. In fact you are the first.
If you want to have a change in a program (in this case Audirvana) you make a feature request. It is that simple.

I never said that my library was a mess (au contraire it is very well organized). Basic politeness goes a long way. No need to get self entitled, personal or condescending.

As said: you do you and have a nice night.

You’re generalizing too much … Audirvana, Yate (2manyrobots) and JRiver do it and MP3tag instead use \
You’re missing that anyway “;” or “;;;” or “\” are just a convention to tell the tag editor to separate the values in single tags.
The result is always the same, you’ll never find inside the file something like this:
Artist1, Artist2, etc…
but you’ll find multiple Artist tags like this
Artist1
Artist2
etc….
that is known as “multi item tag”

I only see a desire to sow controversy to prevent changes. The solution is as easy as modifying the code to accept commas in addition to semicolons. I don’t think it will take more than five minutes to do it. Everything else is snake oil. Best regards.

You should also consider that you’re asking for something that will have a heavy impact on all Audirvana users … you’re not the only user … and more, the separator is the same for all tags, therefore what happens if you have a comma in the content of another tag that is just a punctuation mark? … that’s why semicolons or slash or backslash are used as value separator

It seems to me that you are creating controversy where there is none. No user will be harmed if a comma is added as a separator in addition to the semicolon.

Audirvana developers should have already read this thread so do what you want. Either please the users or please the people who want to waste other people’s time and make the app work worse.

Best regards.

Hi @LETRA,

when you add multiple artists in Audirvāna, what do you see in your tag editor?

Hello Antoine. Thank you for answering but I don’t quite understand your question. I never edit tags with Audirvana because it is very uncomfortable. I use Meta as a tag editor. I search for the album on the Internet and try to make the tags as complete as possible.

Hi @LETRA,

I understand your comment about the metadata editor, the goal is to see what will be displayed in your Meta editing tool after you added the artist in Audirvāna, can you please do so?

Done. Here are the screenshots.
