Apple Lossless files, local, won't play

I have installed Audirvana on a Raspberry Pi4, using DietPi OS.

The local files are residing in the ‘music’ folder of a NAS synology, with I have mounted over Samba (SMB) on the Pi.

The files are scanned, the database is build, Audirvana is analysing the files.

I have a mixture of Apple lossless files and AIFF files. Some albums play, some albums appear to load the first track, stay grey and then jump to the last track of the album (queue) and won’t play.

I have noticed that the files that do play are stored in AIFF and the files that don’t are Apple Lossless file (.m4a).

I even converted one album from .m4a to AIFF using XLD and then let Audirvana rescan the mounted volume. Then the album plays, where it refused to do so.

I copied from another album all .m4a files to a new folder, deleted the old folder and let Audirvana rescan the mounted volume. The album won’t play.

I haven’t checked all Apple lossless files (too many albums), but is this something other people experience as well, or can they reproduce this by converting a file from FLAC to Apple Lossless?

The same files will play without a problem from the same mounted Synology NAS on a MacBook.

Strange, Most of my files are ALAC and they play without problems. What device are they played on? The device must be capable of decoding ALAC.

See my original post, the same files play without a problem on the same streamer/DAC using Audirvana on a MacBook, originating on the same location.

@Damien2 : is there a requirement for a codec or library to be present, which isn’t installed out of the box on some distributions and isn’t a dependency of the Audirvāna package?

@Damien : I have installed the latest version on my Raspberry Pi running the DietPi OS. The music files are on a samba share to the Synology NAS where are music files reside), Audirvana Studio indexes all albums and files.

It just won’t play Apple lossless files (.m4a). I have copied one file, that does play when using Audirvana Studio on a MacBook, to the Raspberry Pi, added the folder , went to ‘folders view’. It sees the files and reads all the metadata, but it still won’t play.

All other formats are playing fine (AIFF, AAC, MP3, FLAC), except Apple Lossless.

Any clue?

Hi @jmtennapel,

Can you go into the Audirvāna settings and in the My Account section? You will see a ‘Start Log Session’ button; click on it and reproduce your issue. After you reproduce it, click 'Stop Log Session’ and post the logs by clicking on the 'Open Log Folder’ button.

This is the part of today.

Do you have this issue with the AMBEO?

No.

Can you go to your device settings in Audirvāna and enable those options?

No, this doesn’t fix the problem.

Like I said before:

  • the same files play without problem from the Synology NAS that is mounted on the Mac to the same Naim streamer
  • it is only .m4a files that don’t play. All other formats I tried from the same NAS location are playing fine.
  • The NAS drive is mounted as a samba share on the Raspberry Pi 4B that runs the DietPi OS.

Hi @jmtennapel,

Can you go into the Audirvāna settings and in the My Account section? You will see a ‘Start Log Session’ button; click on it and reproduce your issue. After you reproduce it, click 'Stop Log Session’ and send me the audirvana_studio.log file you can find by clicking the 'Open Log Folder’ button.

I have sent you an e-mail on the support address.

Are you sure you play ALAC files from a Linux version? I’m starting to believe it is a Linux problem.

This issue is resolved by the latest Audirvana update that has just been pushed on the APT repository.

Wonderful that the people of Audirvana have found a fix for this issue on Raspberry Pi, and maybe even different hardware running the same Linux distribution, or Linux in general.
