I tried plugging an Audioquest Jitterbug into my 2013 MacBook Pro Retina and then plugged my Fiio Andes DAC/amp into the Jitterbug and tried listening to a song (several songs, actually) using Audirvana Plus 2. The sound was distorted and confused sounding–pretty much the opposite of what I had wanted. If I take the Jitterbug out of the circuit, everything is happy. What could be happening with this?
