Audirvāna Studio vs Roon

With how many TB did you choose it?

Yes, the question was about the size of the storage. I forgot that you don’t need a lot of storage.

@Salior , now I remember, what was the solution that I wanted to tell you to try.
It’s called MinimServer. @VoyagerDude use it on a Mac mini. He is very happy with it, and he advised me to adopt it for the server that I’m going to set soon.

@Henri has a server on a PC. I told him about Minim Server. He tried it, and got an improvement of the sound. He was very happy and he bought the software.

The full version of MinimServer costs only 29 pounds. And you pay a few pounds per year for the upgrades. There’s a free version of the software, so you can try it.

EDIT
You can also run it on Linux, NAS or Rapsberry.

Sorry. Quick correction, I personally run minimserver on a synology NAS.
Doubt it does anything for sound quality as it simply acts as a DLNA music server.
But I am glad it just serves original quality FLAC and DSF files without any conversion to DLNA capable renderers.

The trial version btw is fully functional, the only limitation I saw that it can only support a single profile. I got a license because it’s was a soling and stable server and the license was cheap and I wanted to support the developer who is very responsive and helpful.

Henri who is very happy with it, said that it improved the sound in his system.

Maybe for this reason:

Thanks for mentioning Minimserver, I read some good reviews about it.

Is streaming from Qobuz possible with Minimserver?

The thing I like about Roon is that I can use the Ethernet port of my Devialet as an audio zone, something I cannot do with AS (UPnP only). So far Ethernet in sounds extremely good!

Nope, it’s for local content only.

Over the years I’ve purchased a lot of audio-related stuff, Roon was by far my worst purchase and biggest waste of money.

What do you find so great in Roon?
The sound? The bios? The library management?

Thank you for the detailed account.
At the moment, after the trial of AS, I’m a bit tired of trials. But I’ll give Roon a two months new trial soon. I may try Qobuz at the same time to not limit the trial to local files.

I may post my impressions on this thread to give feedback and good ideas to Damien how to improve AS.

What’s wrong with Roon?
Which player do you prefer?

What’s wrong with Roon? I can think of a long list of items, but its only my opinion.

Which player do you prefer? between the two Audirvana

I am on Windows 10 Pro, & I think I need both Roon & Audirvana Studio, it is no contest IMHO, you like one or the other, or perhaps both of them, I would like to mention one thing though: Audirvana has come a long way with the recent AS & has a wonderful UI. :heart_eyes:Audio quality wise AS has more depth, it is a fact.

How about neither?

Should I choose?, the answer would be Audirvana Studio, but I don’t have to.

For the record I didn’t ask for people to choose.

I’m not the OP.

I actually own both, and others…use them now and then…right now I’m using BlueSound Node.

Roon is great! It‘s rock solid, particularly since I installed Roon ROCK, thereby getting out of the way of those troublesome Mac updates.
It allows me to use any of my audio inputs: be it WiFi, Ethernet, and USB, something that is not possible with AS (USB direct or UPnP).
There’s a lot of new music you can discover with Roon radio. On top of that, there’s so much information at your fingertips, be it about the artist or composer. I could spend hours in getting all the infos I want. Though, it distracts a bit from listening to music. But I haven’t seen any player so far being this rich in information than Roon!

I still use AS, though. Sometimes, after listening for extended periods, I switch back to Roon and I get the feeling that AS sounds a bit more relaxed. But it’s getting ever less frequent, as my preferred Roon inputs are Ethernet and WiFi and I need to get my Raspi hooked up for AS/UPnP.

I have Roon on Trial and so far I can’t tell any difference on sound quality compared to 3.5. UI is in another level. Roon is the real deal. I don’t think I will even bother with audirvana studio.

Did you try Roon with HQPlayer?

Try AS at least by curiosity to see what you are missing. The trial is free.

AS plays ISO SATA, has more radios and is cheaper.
