Audirvana with PS Audio AirLens

Hi,
Anyone on here using Audirvana with PS Audio AirLens streamer?
I’m a newbie to digital audio and my demos have led me to favour the PS Audio AirLens, but I can’t see it on the “works with” Audirvana list?
Can anyone tell me if it works and offer me any advice on setup please?
Thanks

Welcome…

Yes, there are Audirvana users on the forum that employ Airlens… What DAC will Airlens connect to?
… For setup advice you will need to provide what file formats you will be playing and what computer platform/OS you are using and an explanation of your network configuration to Airlens and output to your DAC.
When you get playback or not… please post your Debug Info here so folks can help the best possible… it is found here: Settings–> My Account → Help–> Debug Info

:notes: :eye: :headphones: :eye: :notes:

It seems it runs a UPnP/DNLA render, so when you run Audirvana from a computer in the network the Airlens is connected to, it will see the Airlens as a UPnP device it can stream to.

Thank you for replying.

This is all new to me, so if I’ve missed anything let me know.

  1. The DAC I’ll be using is the PS Audio DirectStream DAC MK2
  2. I will mainly play DSD file formats up to DSD256
  3. I will connect via the I2S (I squared S) protocol
  4. I will probably use MAC OS
  5. I will probably connect to the network using wireless WPS, but can also use an ethernet connection if necessary.
    Thank you

Okay…
The DirectStream DAC MK2 converts all PCM signals to DSD, so don’t engage Audrivana upsampling (r8Brain or SoX)… The Airlens is your ‘Bridge’ and you don’t want to limit the sample-rate to anything lower than 352.8kHz (352.8kHz is the maximum PCM sample-rate Airlens will handle…) You can stream up-to DSD256 (22.4MHz) via UPnP to Airlens.

Utilize the shortest well built HDMI/ I²S cable possible !

Always check the macOS ‘Audio MIDI Setup’ to make sure the Airlens is the output device and that it is set for the proper maximum bit/depth and sample-rate. Generally once this is the defined output device for Audirvana it will be the output device recognized when Audirvana is opened, unless Airlens is not powered-up or not available on your network… in this case Audirvana will default to the macOS default output device in Audio MIDI Setup.

Make sure the Airlens and the MK2 share a well-filtered power/ground point/circuit emanating from the wall outlet with no other non-audio related electro-mechanical devices on that circuit (fans, motors, refrigerators, lights, etc, etc…) Use a single socket from the wall… there is no guarantee that both sockets are connected to the same circuit, unless you know for a fact that they are on the same circuit.

I don’t recommend using wireless, until you have become familiar with the behavior of your system on the network…

Audirvana provides an online User Guide found in the top-right of the relevant Settings pop-up windows, so utilize this to get insights… You will get it working :sunglasses: :+1:…If for some reason you don’t get playback, post as much information as possible and paste your debug info here and take it from there… When you do get the system playing music, please post your debug information here so we can check your settings and help to optimize them if needed…

Thanks for bringing this up.
If you decide to give the Airlens a try, please post your observations here
My setup is very similar to yours, except for the DAC (Rockna Wavelight).
PS Audios advice is, that while the I2S connection from Airlens to the Rockna should be fine, they have doubt about the Audirvana => Airlens connection  They recommend Roon.
All the best…

The PS Audio Network Audio forum does not corroborate this statement… You will need to present specific evidence to support this assertion:

Could you provide a source for that? I can’t find it on the PS Audio site.

Hi Lars -

I looked at the AirLens manual and specs. They say it complies with the DLNA 1.5/UPnP AV specification. I’ve run a media renderer with that spec in a network with Audirvāna and it works perfectly fine. So though I’m no expert, I don’t see a specific reason why Audirvāna wouldn’t work with the AirLens.

Hi Andy,
I mailed service@psaudio: “I have two questions for you, one regarding the output: Will my Rockna Waveligt DAC, be able to accept the i2s output from the Airlines??
The other: can I use Audirvãna for feeding the Airlens?? (Airlens is not mentioned on Audirvãnas website as “Plays with Audirvãna)”

And they answered me: “To answer the first question, yes, your Rockna should be able to receive the I2S from our unit. For the second question, unfortunately no, there is not a method to connect Audirvana to the AirLens, our preferred streaming method with that unit is Roon.”
Glad that others think it’s possible - maybe the PS Audio guy didn’t investigate enough :slightly_smiling_face:

Having Roon pay to be the preferred streaming method is just fine, everyone does things like this for marketing. But either the AirLens meets the DLNA/UPnP AV specification that is shown in the manual for the unit or it does not, and if it does, I cannot think of a reason Audirvāna would not be able to stream to it.

If you feel like going to the trouble, it would be interesting to read PS Audio’s response as to why software that complies with the DLNA/UPnP AV specification cannot stream to the AirLens.

I’ll say it again, @Cloclo and your buddy… Don’t selectively parse my statements to fit your contorted narratives…

This is the rest of that statement…

You would think that it would be a hot topic on the PS Audio ‘Network Audio forum’, where the Airlens topics are discussed… I searched the entire community forum for topics using the keyword “Audirvana” and nothing of this sort surfaced.

From the Airlens product page (note the bold text):

Design

Whether you stream network music through Roon, Audirvana, JRiver, Tidal Direct, Spotify, your NAS, or any DLNA-compatible server, you will introduce unwanted noise into your sensitive DAC. A USB connection to the computer is by far the noisiest method, followed by a close second via Ethernet or WiFi. What is needed to completely remove this injurious noise is the elimination of any electrical connection between the computer, its network, and your DAC. The PS Audio AirLens has both an input stage and a galvanically isolated reclocking output stage. The two are connected only “through the air.” By using separate power supplies, there are no physical ground or signal connections, ensuring 100% isolation and noise-free delivery of perfect digital audio signals.

From the ‘Technology’ section of the overview page:

Whether you choose your streamed music through Roon, Audirvana, JRiver, Tidal Direct, Spotify, or any DLNA-compatible source (like your NAS), the addition of the PS Audio AirLens between the network and your DAC will set a new standard of musicality. Simply connect your network to the AirLens through Ethernet or WiFi, then your DAC to the AirLens through either coax (RCA) or I2S (via an HDMI cable) then sit back and be amazed. The AirLens connects any DAC to the outside world via your home network and protects your sensitive DAC from any unwanted noise from cables, computers, and WiFi. The AirLens will handle PCM up to 384kHz, and DSD up to 256 (4X) in DoP or native. The world of streaming just took a major leap forward in sound quality. We cannot wait for you to experience all that streaming has to offer.

Do you see anything incorrect in this statement/advice? … If so, add something productive here and present a correction or addition… The juvenile nature of these responses, speaks volumes of your demeanor and pathology and is just plain boring… :smirk:

Yeah, I thought it would be a ‘hot’ topic too, which is why I asked it here, at least I’m getting some responses. Thanks:)
