Bitrate conversion

Try 20 bit.
Chris was aware about the opinion of Jussi. He quotes it in his review, but in his tests 20 bit sounded better. His review is very interesting.

I suspect that upsampling works slightly different when you set 16bit, and that’s what you like. That’s just a speculation.

I think the reason is that apparently the effective bit depth is always somewhat less than advertised for technical reasons that were explained to me but that I did not understand. So by setting the bit depth at 20 you are getting something close to 16. 16 will get you around 14 I think. As I say I do not understand the technicalities so I may have got it wrong.

Yes. Very good indeed.

Do you have a link to that review?

I tried with Audirvana 3.5 with a 24-192 file of Harvest of Neil Young.
There’s no audible difference between 16 and 24 bit.

With another player that I have, 16 bit is indeed very slightly more dynamic. But the difference is minuscule.

But I do not upsample. Maybe upsampling enhances the result.

This is the review:

Look at his profile. There’s a list of his gear in his three listening rooms.
Chris is very well-equipped for his trials!

I have read the review.

I do not see the referrence to Lasko’s recommendation of 16 bit. Although the review does say that Lasko made unspecified recommendations:
ā€œI asked HQPlayer creator Jussi Laako to help me find the ā€œbestā€ HQP settings for the DAC. Jussi offered some suggestions based on his knowledge of the Terminator’s measurements and of course his savant level of DSP expertise.ā€

It is interesting the reviewer says:
ā€œ20 bits is where the DAC is most linearā€.
No reason is given for that.

Incidentally as the reviewer mentions, the Terminator model he was praising so much is now superseded by the TII and the T+.
I had the model he was testing and then changed to the T+. The improvement is not small and it gets even better if you add the Gaia DDC although that limits upsampling to 705kh PCM and DSD512.

He says that he upsampled in DSD, but that the best sound was in 20/1536.
