Cambridge Audio ONE recognised but won't play

Hello, I have installed the trial version on my Macbook pro (Retina, 13-inch, Mid 2014, running Catalina 10.15.7), connecting to a Cambridge Audio ONE CDRX30 through USB. The ONE is showing and selected in Audio Devices. However, when I play a track there is no response. The Play/Pause button shows as || - Pause, suggesting that the application is trying to play the track, but there is no progress showing and no sound.
What am I doing wrong?

Thanks

Hello @Fester,

When you try to play a song, do you see something displayed on the One or not at all?

Hi Damien,
The ONE only displays that the USB source is selected. The display does not change when I select a track to play.

Thanks

I have contacted Cambridge Audio about the problem, but have had no reply as yet.

Can you sync a local folder in Audirvana and try to play a track from it?

Hi Damien,
Thanks for the help. I’m not near the ONE at the moment, but will try syncing a local folder asap and get back to you.
thanks

Hi Damien,
I tried moving a track to a local folder, but it made no difference; still no response.
I think that this is likely to be a problem with the ONE or my Mac. I have tried closing Audirvana, setting teh standard Sound Output to Cambridge Audio One and then playing something from Youtube. All I get is the spinning wheel of death and no progress along the play bar. It’s as if the mac is waiting for some response from the ONE.

Have you tried to change the audio port used on your Mac to connect to your DAC?

The Mac has two USB ports. I have tried both with the same results. I have no additional hardware connected to the mac (no USB hubs or such like), except the Transcend SD card on which I store my music files. The mid 2014 macbook pros have an integral SD card reader, so the SD card is a permanent resident.
The ONE has an Optical input port. I have read that I can connect an optical cable with a 3.5mm jack to the standard headphone port on the Mac to output the digital signal, but I haven’t purchased the cable yet. I am concerned that if I use this option, all audio output from the Mac will routed to the ONE (not just the music). Is this correct?

I should add that I have tried 3 separate cables; two printer cables and a new cable that the supplier claims is better quality and specifically suitable for audio connections.

You can try to fiddle with the Integer mode, Exclusive access and polarity.

Thanks for the suggestions. I have tried switching all of these options (and a few others), but still get no response from the ONE. I confess that most of this is way over my head.
In the meanwhile, I have received a reply from Cambridge Audio …

Thank you for contacting Cambridge Audio.

The One only supports USB 1.1 and USB Audio 1.0, which works with nearly all common operating systems and computer types without drivers and supports up to 24-bit/96kHz audio, simply plug in and play. In this configuration the One is able to work at up to 24-bit/96kHz by declaring to your computer that it can handle any sample rate from 32kHz to 96kHz. However in some Windows/Mac operating system variants the operating system itself may restrict or fix the output sample rate or re-sample the audio.

With Macs, no extra drivers are required. With the One using the USB Audio 1.0, the One will work with the native Mac OS-X 10.5 (Leopard) or above Audio 1.0 driver and accept audio up to 24-bit/96kHz.

It seems to me that this saying “it should just work”.
Does it mean anything different to you? Is there anything significant in their response?

Thanks

maybe a stupid question, but does it play with any other software, like JRiver or HQPlayer… they have both free demos.

I have tried Swinsian and also YouTube in a Firefox browser with the standard audio output directed to the ONE (Cambridge Audio One is available as a device in the Sound Preferences). I was hoping that the rich configuration features in Audirvana might get around the problem.

you can see your DAC in the Audio Midi Setup in the utilities folder of Applications ?
here on security preferences panels you have features to access soft for files like Audirvana…

OK. This is where I’m up to.
I borrowed a Windows notebook and that worked straightaway, no fussing. I ran Youtube in the browser and redirected the output to the ONE. Clear output, no problems.
I then tried an alternative macbook pro (late 2013) running Sierra 10.12.6. Again, I ran youtube in the browser (safari). This time there was some output, but entirely distorted, stuttering, but just identifiable and playing at the correct speed.
I still get nothing from my mac. No at all sure where to go with this now. I appreciate that this is not a problem with Audirvana and it doesn’t appear to be a problem with the ONE. The older mac produces some output (although distorted), so at least there is somewhere to start.
Any suggestions please.

Try to contact the manufacturer for support.
