Cuts every 5/10 secs

Hello Support Team,

As you see on the title, I have some cuts when I play music with Audirvana Origin.
I saw a similar post and I have been through it and I can say that:

  • I decreased the buffer to around 4400Mb, but still, it cuts,
  • I toggled the RAW/PCM switch but no change.
  • I cannot have a direct USB connection to the DAC, as they are 5m away. It is through a LAN cable,
  • the problem seems fixed when I switch to “no upscaling”. I tried several modes like “times 2” and “by frequency” and it cuts. I did not change the settings as I don’t know what to set…
    I will copy the Debug Info on the next posts.

By the way, I have 2 DAC: CXR200 and CXN from Cambridge Audio and either way, it cuts. And it does not cut when I set to “no upscaling”.
I use Hi-res files either 12 or 24bits.

Do you have any idea where it could come from?

Try reducing the gain before upsampling by -3dB… it is important to manage your gain structure to the DAC… If this does not resolve your ‘cuts’ (I’m presuming you are describing what is called “clipping distortion” rather than actual playback interrupts) Then the most appropriate trouble-shooting step is to make a direct Ethernet connection from your computer to the DAC, to get a baseline reference to work from,. so as to determine if it is network related or not, but you can’t do this because of using the streamer/bridge.… If a direct connection with USB in-concert with the gain reduction/gain management, does not exhibit the ‘cuts’, you will then have a clear trajectory from which to approach a resolution.

You know why you are upsampling at first?
You played with those sox settings?
You understand what you gain or not?

Turn that off… bingo, no more bug!!
Now, just your music played bit perfect.

Then, turn upsampling on again and test settings again… too much troubles for the gain you get?? You decide :grinning:

It’s always bit-perfect, unless the file is not delivered bit-perfect or is grossly damaged by the playback system/application operations… You can still have gain issues with a native sample-rate source file… ISP’s (Inter-Sample Peaks) are commonplace in digital-audio productions…

Thanks Agoldnear and RunHomeSlow for your answers.
Let me try to answer to each point:

  • regarding cuts, I mean real cut in playback. Every 10secs, there is a 1sec interruption, there is a white gap in the music, which is more than annoying…
  • I will try to have a direct RJ45 cable between my computer an the DAC. Will try to get some time this week to make the test?
    And I wil also try to have make ausb connection. Can I try with a hdmi link instead??? (Need to check the kind of connectors and cables available I have here).

Regarding comments from RunHomeSlow, you’re right, not sure I need upsampling…!!! And not sure why I tested that… Just for checking/testing purpose :slight_smile:

I will do more testing because what I founf out more yesterday:

  • I used another computer will same version of Audirvana Origin (latest version) and I got the same behavior! So it is not a computer problem.
  • I will try to output directly to the speackers of my computer so no output towards the audio amplifier, Hi-Fi speackers, LAN cables, switch, etc… I will see if I still got these cuts.
  • The cuts seem random. When I play the same song again, I don’t think it cuts at the same timing. Seems to be different, not always the same number of cut in the song and not at the same time.
  • Or I have a problem with the songs, or is it possible that my Audio Amplifier has problem to decode Hi-Res 24Bits…!?

I read the post from Splice, but it is rather technical for me… :frowning:
