Do you think it would be possible to make a Linux distribution that can be installed on a NUC or other mini PC and run headless, like Roon Rock, Volumio or Daphile?
I tried installing on a NAS but it didnāt work well (old model, maybe thatās the reason) and I donāt want to have to keep the PC on when I want to listen to music.
From what Iāve seen, this is software that installs on a computer that already has Linux installed. I was interested in something like what I mentioned, a bootable ISO image that installs and runs without too much hassle.
It doesnāt exist at the moment. The advantage is convenience; the disadvantage is that itās considerably more software for a small Audirvana team to maintain and provide customer service for, in between squashing bugs and looking for improvements. And then of course you would have people asking for additional features in the OS as well as the software (Iāve seen this happen with another software player for which the developer has put together a minimal headless distribution).
Those are my thoughts anyway, but I donāt work for Audirvana.
Maybe thatās the reason, but I think if there were such a distribution, it would gain some more followers, there are enough people who donāt want to use the computer every time they want to listen to music.
Would the computer running AudirvÄna be in the same room where you were listening? I understand if you wouldnāt want fan noise, for example, interfering with your enjoyment.
If it could be located in another room, then I canāt think of much difference between turning on a computer with a Linux server OS and no GUI, and booting from a USB stick into a dedicated headless distribution. (I do most of my listening with a headless minimal Arch distribution running AudirvÄna in another room.) But perhaps there is a difference for you that I havenāt thought of. Let me know if that is the case.
