Denon AVC-X6700H HDMI not detected as 192 kHz Capable

Hello Readers,

I am evaluating audirvana currently. It does not detect the 192 bitrate from HDMI, while Roon happily uses it without issues.
Max is 96.

I am using exclusive mode. Playing FLAC.

Looking at the debug screen, I see max 96. But the AVR should be able to do more.

Any suggestions?

Guido.

Can you play the higher res file? Regardless of the detection.

Yes, but down sampled to 96. (it’s using a Mac Mini Latest OS (Catalina))

Could you paste the debug info here? Check the sampling rate limitation if something is set.

I just noticed it’s on Mojave, instead of Catalina (my roon is running on a Macmini with Catalina)
Anyhow details are posted for debug info as requested.

Had the same problem with my Marantz av8805. Unfortunately and according to Damien, because of the Heos implementation 192khz files will not play through the hdmi port and instead get routed through the Heos app. This happens every time I play a 192khz file.

I did a trial of Roon and couldn’t get anything to work via hdmi and it would default to airplay. The Marantz is only “roon tested” which means it only works with AirPlay…

Hi Jarrod,

Thank you for your feedback.
Well on my device it’s different, I don’t see routing to Heos. My file plays but in 96kHz. As the software thinks that’s the maximum capability. (see debug-info)

For Roon I have no issue at all, and all plays fine through HDMI on Max 192kHz as per specs. It needs to be configured in Exclusive mode in Roon to make it work, if you want I can share my settings? There are some settings to watch for if they are put correct.
My device is also Roon tested only.

Guido.

Jarrod, have sent PM with my settings… let me know if this works for you now.
Guido.

I’ve noticed that when not physically connecting through HDMI, the 192 kHz options are available. In this case switch to Heos is made when playing and it works.

Guido.

Not following you. I see the 192 files too, just when I play them it switches to Heos. Is that how it is handled in your setup too?

Yes, when not connected to HMDI it uses HEOS, but not otherwise.

And when hooked up via HDMI are you able to play 192khz files?

Nope, they are downscaled to 96. Obviously because the avr is detected as a non 192 khz capable as you see in my debug log. (But only when connected physically to hdmi)

Has the Marantz the same behaviour?

Same exact behavior. It is because of Denon/Marantz’s implementation of Heos and the infrastructure of Audirvana not cooperating. I tried another streamer and it can play 192khz without issue via HDMI, but I like the user experience of Audirvana much better!

Audirvana/Qobuz with DENON x4500,

  • 2017 4.2 GHz iMac sees Denon UPNP as 96khz max
  • 2020 MacBook Pro sees (and plays perfectly) UPNP up to 192KHz.
  • Both computers on Catalina and wifi.
  • Same Qobuz tracks.
  • Both copies of Audirvana set to stream Qobuz up to 192KHz.
  • iMac A-vana 3.5.42(3572)
  • MacBook Pro A-vana 3.5.40 (3570)

Bump. Any idea why two slightly different versions of Audirvana would behave this way, i.e. one sees Denon as 192KHz capable, and the other only 96 KHz? (confirmed in Debug info).
