Direct Mode enable in Mojave

On a Mac mini, does Audirvana allow for higher sample rate and bit-depth output settings than the standard (non-Audirvana) settings?

Is there an Audirvana manual for download anywhere?

Hi all,

I am a bit confused : My understanding is that direct mode is diseabled unless we install the patch described above in this thread.

I have recently installed Catalina on my Mac Mini and I have upgraded to Audirvana 3.5.

In the audio setup preferences , there is a button that apparently turns direct mode « on » and « off » ! no patch has been installed on my Mac, so what does this mean ? is direct mode available or not ?
Please thanks for clarification…

Not there for me on fresh install of Catalina with latest Audirvana 3.5.22.
Maybe a ghost button :grinning: you restart Mac?

oops , you are right !!!
I mixed up with the other functionality “accès exclusif” which is not the same at all …
as you can see I was really confused

Anyway, I am not a fan of patches , workaround, etc … unless the result is worth it.
Would you recommend installing it on my machine ?

We can’t on Catalina
Last working version was on Mojave.
For myself, i don’t see the difference with my system… or my ears

Thanks,
my 60 years old ears are probably worse than yours, so I’ll leave the patch to younger ears if available …

Hi everybody,
I have been usin A+ since the its first version. Believe me, if your sound system is accurate enough, you can hear the difference with and without Direct Mode. It bypasses Apple core audio and avoid several manipulations of datas. That is why it is called “Direct Mode” I suppose.
I am using a late 2012 Mac mini, and I let its OS to El Capitan v10.11.6 version.
As my Mac mini is used only as an Audio Player, I do not need any OS improvment. So please Damien keep Audirvana still El Capitan compatible !!

Is there a way to enable Direct mode on Catalina? Onyx is ready and can be used for Catalina but Extensions folder seems to be read-only and I couldn’t make it read-write enabled so that I can change IOAudioFamily.kext. Did anyone solve this issue?

I didn’t read anywhere yet that someone succeeded with Catalina…

I finally solved the issue and mange to enable Direct Mode on Catalina

so, wanna share it…

I created another topic for the details…

On Mojave, with an external DAC/DDC, with exclusive access and integer mode… Does anyone actually have any hard data (or reference to) whether the direct mode hack actually makes any difference - one way or another?
Just seems to me, this is what integer mode is for.

You’ ll never get your answer… some can’t live without it, some don’t see a difference… make your backup, install it, takes 15 minutes to see, not happy, revert back or just wait till the next OS update it will be erased again :grinning:

By the way, the hack is just to make what Damien did before Sierra… it is not like a pirate thing :grinning:

Thanks a lot I’ve done the trick and on my system it’s a very important improvement.
All is quite better !!!

Thanks a lot

Catalina : I will wait 6 month stabilisation

Hi @RunHomeSlow,

Thanks for your instruction. I followed it managed to turn on Integer mode on Mojave & Audirvana 3.5.40.
Question is, the Integer Mode indicator “Int” does not turn green after start playing songs.
However my debug info is showing Integer mode:

Most importantly, I think I hear the difference…

So How was your “Int” indicator? And do you think integer mode can be actually enabled & effective without the “Int” indicator turn to green?

Another strange thing about Damien design one is green the other… integer mode is not the same! In my bed now. By memory, it is white i think :grinning:

mine is black when playing in white color mode and stay black when stop… so,
same in blue mode… doesn’t change color stop or play. But SysOpt changes color when playing.

… but when you turn it off in the preferences, the button INT disappear from the main window, so you guess it is not in work when off there
