Does DLNA/uPNP get the best out of Audirvana?

There’s a word you don’t hear every day!

This doesn’t have to be the case.

I had optical Ethernet built in when our house was built. The connection from computer to system is 10G optical Ethernet.

I currently convert back to copper to feed the microRendu, a mini-computer purpose-built for low noise and jitter that receives copper Ethernet and outputs USB. That will change whenever I receive my Fitlet3 (probably in the next month or so).

Once that happens, from the computer straight through to the Fitlet3 (a low powered mini-computer that will run Linux) there will simply be a 10G optical Ethernet connection, then USB from the Fitlet3 to the DAC. This will totally isolate the main computer from the DAC electrically, unlike USB. Also unlike USB, 10G Ethernet has both maximum jitter specs and a jitter recovery protocol, ensuring a low jitter feed from the main computer.

So the system will be both quite simple (only adding a low power mini-computer in the chain) and have the USB signal to the DAC coming from a low power mini-computer rather than a more electrically active general purpose computer.

This presents at least the potential for quite high sound quality.

Computer → 10G optical Ethernet connection → Fitlet3 → USB to the DAC
Nice!

My current system… MBP → Thunderbolt 3/4 to Thunderbolt 3/4 PCIe chassis hosting Sonnettech USB3/Firewire 800 card and Elfidelity AXF-107 Ultra PCI Express 1x/16x Power Supply Filter → iFi-Audio iGalvanic 3.0 input (via WireWorld Ultraviolet USB 3 cable) → iGalvanic USB 2.0 output → (via 2" UpTone Audio USB 2.0 USPCB A>B Adapter) to my DAC… This all resides on it’s own “power-island” with advanced power-signal filtering.

There is no doubt that the optical link reduces noise potentials inherent in copper connections, however there is no error-correction in a digital-audio signal transmission unless you are running Ravenna protocol, because you are transmitting DSD signals, … I presume you will operate the Fitlet3 as a DDC and re-clock the bit-stream before delivering to the DAC… The different connection transition points are always potentials for data corruption… My system is no exception… (I treat all my connection points with contact enhancement).

No worries… I haven’t been run off… In my 40+ years of professional HW/SW computing I’ve run across a lot of folks that have their strong opinions about this and that… Sorry I didn’t present screen shots of SPLs, Impulse Responses and Noise… Some folks noise is other folks warmth… What were Faraday, Tesla and Maxwell telling us? I didn’t do A/B/C blind testing… I didn’t have another do the A/B/C testing… I didn’t present a white paper with my findings complete with references… I guess for some folks my opinion wasn’t well received… Oh well…

What I’ve been presenting is not based on what the DAC acts upon, but rather the data-integrity of the digital-audio data being delivered to the DAC, which can be corrupted in the transmission scheme and this data is the only digital-audio signal we assess in the final audition…

Yeah duck, water, back  That’s the only one really, usb zealot of some kind, I have tried both successfully and found that the streamer Ethernet solution is very nice.
Currently using the beginner level ifi zen stream at my new home. I also have a NAD M33 and really do like TuneIn radio that is included with it in BluOs. Does the Lumin include it or is there a subscription needed?

Seems we have some things in common… I use a short WireWorld USB cable to connect my DAC to my Purpose Build Lumin Streamer which not only isolates my analogue leg from the upstream noise, it also can provide content via some streaming services… Oh, and yea, I have all my networking equipment on a common power conditioner “island”…

In this world… It may be one of the only things that matters… The majority of the common-reality we all share is pretty much out of our control…

The Lumin does have access to TuneIn radio, a free account gives you access… I mostly use Audirvana to access Internet Radio…

It obviously matters much to you, I’m a bit more concerned about the shit being pumped into the sea I can no longer safely swim in, and shit being pumped into our lives by right-wing nut-jobs…

But that’s just politics, right.

Right wing nut jobs? Are you implying there are no Left wing nut jobs? Lol…

They don’t scare me. They’re not arguing to execute people who happen to be gay, or trans, or black, or in need of an abortion… but let’s not argue this here…

:joy: Studio’s radio is probably my biggest disappointment, No Metadata and wonky work around to add stations and save as favorites. I’m really surprised by your approval of it I must say. BluOs on the NAD and my Denon and Marantz AVR are my current preferred radio solution. I’ve been holding out hope that Studio will come around soon.

You brought it into the conversation… Everybody has an agenda and the biases of selective exposure… this is true in the Audiophile world as well… :smirk:

We will have to agree to disagree… :sunglasses:

You have my vote for that.
Right,Left,Blue,Red f that. How about we all get back to the golden rule and right vs wrong.

Omg i said golden, do I owe a royalty?

There a lot of things I don’t really like about Audirvana vs Roon… The fact that Aduirvana, In my opinion, has better SQ with my kit and allows plugins is the winner for me… There is much work that could be done on the User Interface including the Internet Radio arena…
Red Left, Blue Right? Sounds like an Anaglyph…

Do you do your own Room Correction? And do you have any Traps, Absorbers and/or Diffusers?
I use REW to measure room response and I use REW and RePhase to create FIR filters and the HangLoose Convolver to apply Room Correction in Audirvana…

Yes Roon radio implementation is pretty good, stations coming and going is a pain to keep up with but Brian is very accommodating. Back to UPNP and the Lumin devices, since we have a bit of common usage scenario how much do you like the Lumin app to use it without a computer ?
My dealer will give me one for 60days but that’s as good as a one way trip, I’ve never had to return him anything yet :joy:
