Fiio M11: Noise when playing DSD

Hi, I’m facing the same issue,
Audirvana can play DSD files to my Mac speaker, but not my dac, only noises.

Hi @Vinh_Duc_Nguyen_Le,

macOS is not able to send raw DSD streams. That’s why the DSD over PCM standard has been developed: to send raw DSD in a fake PCM stream.
To identify it as such, there are 8 bit markers in it.
And the presence of these markers doubles the need of bandwidth, thus explaining why on a mac only half of the max DSD rate is available.

If your DAC is compatible with DSD over PCM, you can set the native DSD read method to “DSD over PCM 1.0” in the device section of the audio settings page.
If your DAC has a volume control, you may need to ensure it is set at 100% during DSD playback to prevent its USB interface from damaging the DSD signal.

I think you use replay gain by album…
ain’t that playing with volume not at 100% ?

Also you should update to Ventura 13.4, 13.3 was really a bad update…

One suggestion, I don’t know where the polarity inversion takes place in Audirvana, but could it be that the dac doesn’t understand the DoP because of that?

Do you happen to have any other software that can play DSD? For testing.

Does it work with DoP v1.1?

I’m probably not looking in the right place, but I can’t find anywhere that DoP over USB is an option on the M11.

Is there a FiiO firmware update that enables DoP.

When you play through the speakers, DSD is converted to PCM.

turn out it can play DSD64 but not DSD128

Update: with same set up, can play DSD128 via roon, so i think it isn’t about the DAC

From the M11S USER Manual:

Notes: when the M11S is going to work in the USB DAC mode for the
first time, FiiO’s exclusive USB DAC driver is required. Please download
it on our website and follow relevant instructions to install it.

This is really weird… the M11 doesn’t need a driver for Windows, but requires one for MacOS :thinking:

For Mac systems, a driver is needed. 1) After connecting the M11S to the Mac computer, click the “NO NAME” folder emerging on the desktop->double click Mac->Mac/MACOS MTP Client->Android File Transfer.dmg. Drag the “Android File Transfer.dmg” to the desktop of the computer. 2) Drag the “Android File Transfer” file to the “Applications” folder and wait for the completion of the copy. 3) Enter “Applications”, and double click the “Android File Transfer”. Then you can manage the files stored in the internal storage of the M11S or the Micro SD card. Notes: The M11S folder will directly pop up the next time it is being connected to the same computer.

This is only used for downloading files from Mac to Fii0. I could not get it working at all on Mac M1 Studio. I have used Open MTP for the transfers.

Got it … Thanks… I somehow missed the DAC playback description in the manual…

So, you must ask yourself why other Audirvana users like myself on MacOS platforms with other DACs, are not experiencing the behavior you are exhibiting on your M11 playing DSDxxx…? … I personally play DSD128 on my 2016 MacBook Pro using Audirvana 2.3.4 via DoP 1.1 with no problem.

I’ve switched from Fiio M11 to Topping D30pro, but still facing the same problem. :frowning:

DSD128 requires DoP 1.1 enabled… the DoP carrier PCM sample-rate is 352.8kHz.

Make sure the DAC is at the top of your USB bus hierarchy, you can see this in the System Report make sure you are using a High Speed USB 2.0 cable and if you are using a USB hub, try connecting directly from the Thunderbolt output.

Update the firmware on the DAC.

When DoP is represented as noise by a DAC then I would assume that the data stream arrives incomplete / not bit perfect.

The bits that should indicate that this is not standard PCM but DoP are not complete. This cloud happen by volume control, by DSP or some other influence from inside or outside Audirvana.

Have you already tried DoP v1.1.
A reinstall of Audirvana?

Google Inc means DAC’s OS I think.

I tried both, v1.1 and reinstalling but not work.
