Integer mode is limited to 16bits/48khz on USB DAC Avantree DG60

When enabling the integer mode with an Avantree DG60 USB DAC (aptx-HD) on MAC (and also PC), Audirvana is switching the interface to 16bits even when reading 24 bits records. With the integer mode disabled, interface is now 24bits/48khz as per Qualcomm IC characteristics of the Avantree DAC. Is there any possibility to use the 24 bits capability of the Avantree DAC in Integer mode, as this mode is anyway better sound quality?

That’s normal, don’t use this dongle. It’s not really designed for music of any reasonable quality. To what are you trying to play?

Before telling such statement, you should better test it. I did it during weeks and was amazed with the results. I challenged a Fostex HP-8AC DAC connected to a DEQX HDP-Express II preamp and the results were far from being ridiculous. With the Avantree DG60 connected in aptX-HD to an Ifi audio Zen blue, the musical emotion was very close to the challenged equipment, at an incredibly lower price (and no cables). I know the Qualcom IC driving the Aptx-HD connection is making some compression but the result is so good that I couldn’t believe my ears. And I have been fighting for years against all kind of data compression. A friend of mine with a 30k$ audio system came exactly to the same conclusion.

You’re on a Mac, it will play using AptX or AAC to the iFi Zen Blue without issues. You might be surprised with the result.

Yes I agree with you, but it will be AptX, not AptX-HD. I’m interested in the 24bits/48khz capability. My Mac has an internal disk of 2Tbytes with AIFF recordings, 16 and 24 bits. I tested AAC in the past to use on an Astell&kern player and I finally chose Alac as giving the best results. The Qualcom IC used on the Avantree DG60 (also used by the way on the Ifi Zen blue) is giving a great sound with limited compression. Results are amazing (but you need to make sure that your use the very recent version of the Avantree bluetooth usb key - previous versions had bugs and less sound quality - and that you select AptX-HD resolution). AptX-HD has a transfer of 576 kbits compared to the 350 kbits of AptX and even less for AAC. But I know there is a big debate regarding AAC vs AptX.
Avantree is now on the way of implementing LDAC bluetooth codec which would be the best solution. Anyway, my understanding now from the debug info is that integer mode is limited to 16 bits due to Qualcom IC AptX-HD design. I will be waiting for the LDAC version. Thanks for the advices.

Set Audirvana to resample fixed to 48KHz. This is the input sampling rate of AptX-HD.

Just for the kicks, try with AAC directly from the Mac.

AAC for file encoding is not the same thing as AAC for Bluetooth transfer. It’s the same codec, and if the file is AAC format it will be transferred as such to the device where it gets uncompressed. The other files are packaged in AAC stream and transferred.

If you can tell the difference between AAC and ALAC, Bluetooth is not for you. While AptX-HD might be a bit better (debatable), it’s still compression.

Yes I know the benefit of AAC transfer with file in AAC format but my records dB is in AIFF file encoding, so I don’t know what’s going to happen when transferred in AAC.
Now what my ears are telling me:

  • AAC directly from MAC to Ifi Zen Blue is working fine but slightly less dynamic and clearness than AptX-HD on Avantree key
  • setting upsampling to 48khz in Audirvana is very slightly improving the sound - thanks
  • I know there is still some compression with AptX-HD, that is why I’m really expecting Avantree to move to LDAC where there is less compression (or maybe even no compression if 16bits/48khz - LDAC is expected to go up to 96khz)
  • of course my original system with the Fostex HP-A8C DAC is at the end more performant (up to 32bits/192khz sampling) but at a much higher price. For the price of the wireworld platinum cables I’m using to connect it, you can buy 5 Ifi Zen Blue and this device is fantastic sound for the value.
  • as I’m retiring and will move, I would like my MAC to be distant from the Hi-fi system, therefore the investigation on Bluetooth. The sound results I’m discovering here are quite pleasant and acceptable in front of the benefits. And LDAC should be there very soon.

Thanks anyway for your help and patience.

No prob, I would still investigate the possibility to incorporate an UPnP to USB bridge in the system.

Reporting the same issue with the Cayin N3Pro – integer mode only seems to work with 24 bit files and above. Audio dropouts and 2x playback speed occur exclusively with 16 bit files.

What gives? Would love to get some assistance on this as integer mode is a great feature that would be a shame to miss out on.

Putting the debug info here just in case:

Can you also try to test a track in iTunes and set audio midi setup to play in 16 bit? Do you experience the issue?

If you have an issue with 16bit, can you try to enable upsampling in the audio output setting of Audirvana?

Tested a 16bit track from iTunes and encountered the same problem.

When forced upsampling is enabled, the track plays normally.

I hope I wouldn’t have to turn on forced upsampling to use integer mode though, would rather not upsample.

If you have also the issue with iTunes, this then means that your DAC have an issue, you should talk about it with your DAC manufacturer.

Apologies, I thought you meant play tracks from iTunes with Audirvana via the Music Library Syncronization feature. 16bit tracks play normally on iTunes.

Okay, have you tried with any of your other device? do you experience the same behavior?

If by ‘device’ you mean DACs, yes I have, and I don’t experience the same behavior with them. It only happens with the Cayin N3Pro.

Hi Damien, I updated to version 3.5.42 and it is working fine, no bugs so far. I was just wondering if the issue I brought up in the previous post would be addressed in future updates?

I understand that I probably represent a very small number of your user base as the Cayin N3Pro is not commonly used as DACs, but I just wanted to know if you have any plans to address the issue. It’s not a dealbreaker if you don’t, as I know software development is a tricky process.

Lastly, is there anywhere I can find the release notes for each update? Would be nice to see what kind of enhancements or bug fixes have been made.

Cheers,
