Issue playing some 7.1.4 wav files

I am a new Audirvāna Studio user. Some of my 7.1.4 wav files play fine and others don’t. The problem is that not all the channels play.

Here is output of a file being played with Audirvāna 3.5, and you see there’s something on all channels

Here is output of the same file being played with Audirvāna Studio, and you see there’s only content on the first 6 channels.

On the other hand, some 7.1.4 files play just fine? Any suggestions for fixing this?

Thanks!

VOX also works fine for this file.

If you open that file in Audacity do you visually see content in channels 7 through 12?

Also, try converting the WAV file to WAV using XLD. I’ve found this helps get around some issues once in a while.

You can look at the file in an app like MP3 Tag as well and it’ll give you info about the header to compare with working files.

Thanks for the suggestions! I do see content on channels 7–12 in Audacity. And all channels play in VOX, Audirvāna 3.5, and JRiver.

Less success with the XLD and MP3 Tag suggestions, probably something I’m doing. XLD complains: “Selected output format does not support input format.” and I don’t see header info in MP3 Tag. I’ve been using mediainfo (on linux) for that.

Use JRiver to convert from WAV to WAV. I’m willing to bet this will resolve the issue.

Using JRiver to convert WAV to WAV does produce a file that works in Audirvāna Studio. Thanks!

Whether that workflow scales and makes sense for me is less clear. I have three other players that don’t require it. Perhaps easiest to stick with Audirvāna 3.5 and hope that this is fixed on Audirvāna Studio or Roon adds support for more than 8 channels. My only issue with Audirvāna 3.5 is problems with large (> 2 GB) files.

I ran mediainfo on the two wav files (diff below) and two differences are Format settings and Channel layout.

Great to read that fixed it.

I’m with you on Studio working with these files and Roon supporting more than 8 channels.

I also wish Studio worked well with VST3 plugins. As it is now, it’s unusable.

The greater than 2GB issue is also a pain.

Hi @mkt,

I would like to reproduce your issue on my end. Can you please send me those files at support@audirvana.com?

Done. Thanks!

Another data point.

I downloaded the 7.1.4 wav file here EBU QC - Details of Channel-based 7.1.4 and it plays in Studio. After I run it through ffmpeg, all channels do not play in Studio.
ffmpeg -i channels_7_1_4_adm_bsldet.wav -c copy channels_7_1_4_adm_bsldet-ff.wav

Again the difference seems to be Format settings and Channel layout.

Fortunately both files play in 3.5.
