Issue with connecting Yamaha network player and OUTPUTS tab

Newbie questions…I have several network devices hard wired onto same network through a 48 port switch. MacOS, Tidal…

In the outputs tab where I select the player I want to use have the following issues:

  1. Yamaha RN-301 Player (driving ceiling speakers in the kitchen)show up in both the DAC and NETWORK lists when clicking on the speaker icon. The version under DAC is the only one that works but with limitations (44.1kHz shown as 'Supported PCM rate)/ The version fro same device under NETWORK appears to connect, starts the initial process when playing a song (decoding?) but then crashes the software when teh song looks like it is about to play. Thsi appears to support higher PCM rates in teh setup menu but does not work.
  2. Also connected is a Denon AVR - X3500H which works fine with higher PCM rates with the slight issue that it shows up four times in the NETWORK list.

I would appreciate any guidance to resolve. Reasonably happy with trail but finding the niggles a little annoying.

Thanks!

Hello @PieterC,

Can you send me a copy of the “Debug Info” while you are connected to your Yamaha? You can get it in Audirvana Settings>General>Debug Info

Note: By clicking on the Debug Info button, Audirvana automatically copies all its content, all you have to do is paste it in response to this message.

For Denon, is it HEOS compatible?

Hi Damien, thanks for your reply, yes the Denon is HEOS compatible.

Can you deactivate upsampling and try to play a track again?

I have and the result is the same, I think I may have toggled that to see if it changes anything before. Can send teh new debug info?

Hello @PieterC this is a bug in the media renderer upnp implementaiton of yamaha. You must also note that the device tyou see in DAC is in fact Airplay as it only support 44,1kHz. Can you check in the Audio Midi Setup app of your Mac if its the case?

Furthermore, when you click on this link: http://192.168.1.17:60006/upnp/desc/aios_device/aios_device.xml
Are you able to see something? Can you make a screenshot of it?

Hi @Antoine,

Thanks for persevering!

You are right that the the Yamaha is in fact playing through Airplay when selected from DAC list. It shows up in the MIDI Setup and has only a fixed setting of 44,1kHz that can’t be changed, my computer is a late 2015 iMac with this limitation. Does this mean I am stuck with this?

For wireless connectivity you are stuck to it. HAve you trued to connect to your Yamaha with a cable?

Thank you for the xml information but it’s hard to read, can you download the xml file and send it to us at support@audirvana.com?

The Yamaha (and all other devices except mobile phones and tablets) are hard wired on the LAN (Cat. 6 network). Do you mean connecting a TOSLINK or COAXIAL cable? I have thought of that but will be only as a test as it is not convenient placement.

I will download the xml file and send as requested. The moment I have figured out how to do it…

Yes, only for the test, to see if you have more than 44,1 available.

When you open the xml in your browser, right click on the text and click on “save under…”

Hi @Antoine,

I have sent the xml file to the support address, perhaps you have received it?

Some observations about the Yamaha RN-301 if it is useful to anyone that I have since figured out:

  1. To use the Yamaha from the NETWORK list like any of the others on my system (not going through Airplay) is to switch the source on the unit itself to SERVER manually. Go figure. It seems pretty obvious now but the other Yamaha unit on my home network (RX-V581) switches source automatically when it is selected in Audirvana as does the Denon. Maybe a shortcoming in the software on the unit? So now it works when selected from the NETWORK list…but…only with PCM rates 44,1 and 48 supported. According to the spec the unit is capable to 192kHz.
  2. So I did what you suggested and connected it with a TOSLINK cable trailing a 10m long one from the Mac to the unit to test. When connected in this way and setting the source manually to OPTICAL (not getting caught out twice…) it does in fact play at 24/192 which is the full extent of its capability. Incidentally there is a significant audible sonic quality difference when set up in this way so really the way to go.
  3. It would appear that through some limitation within the unit it is not capable of anything above 48kHz when connected over ethernet but when connected with a digital interconnect (I have not tried the COAXIAL but assume that too will work) goes up to 24/192. Am I missing something?
  4. Since trailing a 10m TOSLINK cable across the dining room floor is not a practical long term option could you suggest an alternative setup perhaps. What about something like a Hifiberry Digi + Pro to overcome this?

The Denon issue persists, it is not a big deal but would be good to resolve. Let me know if you have not received the xml file.

Thanks for the help!

P

Hello @PieterC, the xml file has been received, we will need to review it properly and maybe contact Denon for further explanations.
