When listening to Audirvana Origin to local music, my whole computer will hang for a couple seconds in between tracks, mouse and keyboard input isn’t responsive, but the music keeps playing. It’s inconsistent, sometimes it’s every track on the same album, sometimes none on the same album. I’ve tried disabling all plugins and processing, toggling exclusive mode and large IO buffer, toggling system optimizations. Every configuration has the same issue. I never have this problem with any other music app such as Plexamp.
Try rebooting your playback system… Otherwise, more information is needed… Please paste your debug information report here so we can see you computer resources and configuration and your Audirvana settings relative to your computer platform and playback scenario… It is found here:

Rebooting and fiddling with settings seems to help, but the issue always comes back. Here’s my current debug log.

[Post revised 7/5 to reflect correction noted in @DCdane 's post below…]
I suggest using ‘Power of Two’ upsampling strategy… this will produce the correct logical results for PCM files…
![]()
Agoldnear, I haven’t had my morning coffee yet, but isn’t 4132Mb equivalent to 4.132Gb and not 41.3Gb?
![]()
It’s 4 GB not 41. I’ve tried power of two as well as disabling upsampling. I’ve been trying maximum to keep the system from changing sample rate at all during playback of different files.
@phrygiancache, Yes… that is correct … my mistake… sorry for the misread…

Also the MODI+ specifications show as this:
Sample Rates and Bit Depths: 16/44.1 to 24/192 via USB, Coax, and Optical
??? You have upsampling enabled… it is already changing sample-rate, but illogically when upsampling to the DAC maximum of 192kHz when you are playing PCM files based on 44.1kHz formats which logically should be converted to 176.4kHz (Power of Two) … for example: 44.1k → 176.4kHz and 48k → 192kHz.
Try limiting the bit depth to 24 bit.
Also, The debug report is showing the ‘Selected Device’ as the Apple built-in headphone CODEC, as it is showing the sample-rate capability to 96kHz…
So, what are your computer system control settings in Audirvāna?
I have a M2 Max Mac Studio with 64GB of System RAM running the latest macOS and latest version of Audirvāna Studio with 8GB of playback preload memory allocated… I modulate (upsample) all PCM files to DSD128 in r8Brain after applying EQ Studio and a HRTF plug-in for headphone playback and do not experience the behavior(s) you are describing… playback is flawless… I give Audirvāna extreme priority disabling all superfluous system actions in the computer settings of Audirvāna.

As I said before, it doesn’t matter what settings I use. I’ve tried everything from stock settings with everything disabled to only enabling performance enhancements etc. The debug output is just the latest combo I’ve tried. I think there is something wrong with Auvirvana’s integration with the new M4 Apple silicon chips. That or MacOS itself is having driver/IO bugs. I don’t think this is a hardware issue.
Audirvāna does not integrate at the component topology level… Audirvāna integrates with macOS Audio and Visual/Core Audio API’s (Application Programming Interface)…
M4 MacBook Pro crashing/hangs when connec… - Apple Community

Follow up to this post. I’ve isolated the issue in that it only happens when playing music from the internal SD card slot on the M4 MacBook Pro and only with Audirvana. I am using a brand new Transcend 1 TB Jet Drive SD card formatted in APFS. I’ve tried every combination of settings in Audirvana, done a clean install, and even a clean install of MacOS and the issue persists, but only in Audirvana, not in VLC or IINA or QuickTime. There seems to be a bug in Audirvana related to reading from the SD card. The card itself is fine and read speeds are plenty for other audio apps.
SD cards are notoriously slow…
![]()
Like @Agoldnear already posted: SD cards can be very slow. Audirvana loads tracks in memory and plays from memory (this is by design). This can totally explain the couple of seconds of delay (‘hanging’) between tracks. This also can explain why other software doesn’t exhibit this problem.
I am not defending Audirvana here but I don’t think this is a bug since Audirvana works fine with most external media. You simply need fast enough storage. If you don’t have that problem with Audirvana on other (external) drives there is your answer.
I know that SD cards are slow, but they are plenty fast for playing even DSD audio files in other music applications. Only Audirvana is struggling. I don’t care if it takes time to load a track. It shouldn’t be freezing IO for keyboard and mouse input when it loads a new track no matter how slow the disk media is.
Hi @phrygiancache,
Can you contact me over [email protected]? I would like to see your issue directly during a screen sharing session.
