Topping E50 switches off after a minute

Hi I have a strange behaviour here: After a minute or so playing audio to my Topping E50 Audio-DAC it switches off (goes into suspend). According to the world wide web this happens if the DAC does not receieve a valid signal. Which is strange for many reasons, two of them are:

  1. This happens while music is playing
  2. This behaviour is new, it used to work flawlessly since I use this setup.

My System: Old Macbook Pro (from 2012 or so), Audirvana Studio latest version, Topping E50 DAC
This happens when I playback from harddisk (external SSD) and streaming from Tidal. It the same wheter I start directly from the macbook or start remotely with iphone or ipad. I’m on the studio subscription.

Hi @Audiopilot could you confirm how you DAC is connected to your Mac and also run your debug info from your Settings/Account page and paste the information in your reply in this thread. Hopefully someone can ascertain from that information what the problem could be.
I would also turn everything off in order of speakers/dac/Mac/router and remove plugs from power sockets for more than a minute, then restart in same order just to see if that irons out any kinks in the setup of the system.
Good luck…

Restart in reverse order. Edit function won’t work. :+1:

Hi I connect with USB. I have to wait for the icloud to sync for the photo of the settings page but will post it here asap.

I replugged the macbook an the dac, the rest of my hifi is analogue. The Router has to stay online as well, otherwise I will be slaugthered…

This is the settings page, hope we’re talking about the same thing…

The debug information is found here:
Settings–> My Account–> Help–> Debug info

If you can play your Local Library files using the built-in speakers as expected… then you have a point of reference from which to trouble-shoot your system… If you can playback from the built-in speakers, you will need to suspect the DAC or a bad USB cable or adapter… Verify the USB port the DAC is connected to if functioning by attaching something else to that port…

You can also verify the USB devices operating on the USB bus by opening “About This Mac” and opening “System Report” and look in the “Hardware” report for “USB” and select to open the USB bus report to see the devices operating on the bus.

Thanks, @Agoldnear For now I’ve started the logging as proposed. of course, now everything works just fine…

I indeed supect it a to be hardware issue, (cable or macbook), let’s see if something comes up…

hi @Audiopilot,

Does it happens with a specific kind of track or any of them?

This is suspicious:
You are allocating 13.3GB of your 16GB System RAM for the playback pre-load memory buffer… I suggest lowering this allocation to @ 4GB.

:notes: :eye: :headphones: :eye: :notes:

What is your reasoning behind that?

Hi Antoine,
no specific track. It happens both whenplaying off ssd-drive or streaming from tidal

I now figure it is/was a cable issue or due to worn hardware. Since my last reboot 24h ago the system played through.

In any case, it’s good to know how to troubleshoot such a situation…

You are leaving approximately 3GB of System RAM for macOS… You don’t need more than 4Gb for playback pre-load buffer… Increasing the available RAM for the OS, reduces virtual memory disc-swap request interrupts and the OS operates more efficiently…

:notes: :eye: :headphones: :eye: :notes:

From the Audirvana Online User Guide:

There is a fine balance to be made in achieving the best possible playback sound-quality in any given playback system scenario.

:notes: :eye: :headphones: :eye: :notes:

If you just use your computer for music playing with Audirvana like most of us do here… just read the first 2 sentences there…

13.3 out of 16gb is the default numbers made by Damien for the buffer…

if you use your computer to play with Safari, photoshop or other softs,
yes, then you can lower the buffer IF you have bugs!

i guess I stick with the default…

This is your interpretation of what “other tasks performed by your computer outside of the application” applies to…

You forget about bus management, system buffering, etc, etc… Audirvana does not run without CPU cycles and bus management sub-routines, etc, etc, like Core Audio functions and transmission protocol CODECs and the control of the flow of the memory bus architecture(s). … You are making a presumption regarding the default allocation of System RAM…
