Track loaded, track 'plays' no sound, waveform bar bar keeps moving

Hello @Antoine

Quite odd/wierd behaviour.

This has been happening to me over past few weeks, several times

The next track is loaded but no data seems to be present.

You can see the progress bar is operating (white bar showing without the waveform showing, Waveform Display is on.

I have to close Audirvana and restart and the issues is fixed.

Regards

Phil

Hi @philipjohnson,

If you click on the button to go to the next track, do you have the same behavior?

Well… an excellent question.

I’ll… Let… You… know…

PJ

I see that this 96kHz file is quite long, just under 14 minutes… Does this happen with long high-resolution pieces? When was the last time you defragged your library, etc…?
In general, does this behavior occur playing high-resolution files (88.2, 96k…) files in an album of high-resolution files? … Does this happen with files in the middle or end of a high-resolution album?

:notes: :eye: :headphones: :eye: :notes:

Hi @Antoine

UPDATE-Y-RAMA

I paused to go shopping.
On return, resumed playback and the flat white status line appears, moving as though playing. No sound.
Clicking onto next track BUTTON, same story, and then next track BUTTON same story.
Click Back a track and normal loading of track abd sound resumes.
Clicking on next track in the list mormal loading.

Wierd?
Enjoy!

So clicking to go to the next track the same behaviour.

Go back to previous track and then forward to next track and the track loads.

@Antoine

Another point is the speed which the tracks load under normal conditions… Frequently the whole track is immediatwly loaded the moment it clicks over. I’ve not seen that behaviour before.

Phil

What happens when you clear your playback pre-load cue buffer and select the track that was not loading?

:notes: :eye: :headphones: :eye: :notes:

Hi @Agoldnear

“What is clear your playback pre-load cue buffer”?

Phil

Uggh! :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye: I meant to write… ‘queue buffer’

Thanks @Agoldnear

I don’t have that option. I play by Album.

What I have done, as you suggested earlier, is defragment etc.

Now a whole album has played without the issue.

I’ll be updating…

PJ

Unless I am missing something with Origin (I use Studio)
When you play an album, the whole album of tracks is loaded into the playback queue buffer and you will always see those tracks, along with any previous tracks that had been loaded into the playback pre-load buffer if there is enough available RAM. Otherwise they get purged… This is why pre-load buffer memory allocation affects playback performance, either in a positive way when there is a reasonable amount of System RAM to allocate, or in a negative way when System RAM resources are relatively small, as in the case of the 8GB System RAM available in your MacMini.

“Unless I am missing g something” are my words because I can’t, for the life of me, locate the playback queue buffer.

Where is that showing?

(Blind) Phil

(If you can get somebody to help you…) As pointed to, in my last screenshot, where the on-screen playback controls are located, you will find an icon to the right of the the ‘random play’ or ‘repeat play’ control button icon… The icon looks like a stack of lines with a numeral that indicates the number of tracks in the queue… Clicking on this icon will bring you to the Play Queue screen where the queued tracks are displayed,… At the top-left you will find the ‘Clear Play Queue’ button… Clicking on the button will clear all tracks in the queue except for the track currently playing, and will clear the complete play queue when no track is playing…

Got it. New info in the old noggin every day.

I did the fragment etc and all albums playing properly now so that might have been the issue as I had not done that process for months and loads of new music has been added in those months.

Let’s see…

In your case with 8GB of System RAM, even though you don’t use up-sampling, etc, I suggest reducing your playback pre-load memory allocation to 2-3GB so to insure best playback performance…

Thank you @Agoldnear and @Antoine

I have done the Maintenance and changed the preload to 2.5 g… for a day the system ran true to normal.

This morning, however, the old problem resurfaced.

Weird stuff.

Phil

So… what happens when you stop the playback of the silent track and clear the Play Queue and try to play that track again? …
Does this behavior occur on the same album(s) or is this random? …Have you reseated your library drive connection? How old is the Lacie drive? …Have you tried repairing both the system drive and library drive using ‘Disk Utility’?
Have you changed anything with your power/grounding/earthing scheme?

Thanks @Agoldnear

These I will do now…

Hi @Agoldnear
Hi @Antoine

Latest Debug at bottom of this post…

Od behaviour occurs. Click forward a track and same thing happens. Clock back a track and then forward and track plays normally.

  1. I have repaired external discs holding my library.
  2. I have reseated the library drive connection.
  3. No changes to power/grounding etc.

Suggested Changes:

  • Sample rate limitation: 352kHz
  • Sample rate switching latency: 1.5s (if this works try a lower setting)
  • Disable the Apple plug-in to get a baseline reference…
