UPnP issue streaming DSD to Denon AVR-X3700H

Hi,

I just upgraded my Denon receiver from the X1200W to a new X3700H and I’m having issues streaming DSD files from Audirvana.

This was never a problem on the old X1200W, in fact streaming from Audirvana was the only way for me to listen to DSD on that receiver since it didn’t support DSD through HDMI.

The new X3700H receiver works with FLAC and ALAC streamed from Audirvana (haven’t tried anything higher than 192/24) but if I switch to DSD then no sound comes out. My work around for now is to stream DSD to my OPPO UDP-203 and pipe that to the Denon, since the new receiver does support DSD over HDMI but I would like to have a direct path for DSD streaming as I used to have with the X1200W.

I found some threads in the forum that seemed related but mentioned HEOS which is not what I’m trying to do here so I hope posting a new thread might help people on the same situation.

This is my first post so let me know if there’s any other information I should be posting to help diagnose the issue.

Hello @juandg,

Can you send me a copy of the “Debug Info” while you have selected your X3700H? You can get it in Audirvana Settings>General>Debug Info

Spoke with Denon briefly and they initially weren’t very helpful other than directing me to the receiver product page which specifies that it supports DSD Audio Streaming (2.8/5.6MHz).

When I asked about HEOS, they said that all HS2 Devices (which my receiver is one of them) can play DSD up to 5.6MHz via HEOS, they directed me to their HEOS App to stream DSD content from my network, which I was able to do successfully by setting up an UPnP server on my computer and using the HEOS app on my phone.

Okay, we already talked a bout it with them and they answered that we will need to add HEOS in Audirvana to make DSD over UPnP work properly with their device, unfortunately this will take some time and it’s not our priority for the moment as we have a lot of thingd to develop for Audirvana.

Thanks @Antoine I was a bit confused why people kept talking about HEOS in regards to streaming DSD but I understand now.

It’s frustrating that my old Denon X1200W had no problem doing DSD over UPnP and the new receiver hides that same functionality behind the HEOS protocol.

Fortunately I have some work arounds but as I said they are less than ideal so hopefully this functionality gets added to Audirvana in the near future.

I believe I have the same DSD playing problem with my Marantz SR7011 receiver. The receiver works fine with Audirvana over UPnP with FLAC and ALAC. However, when I switch to DSD I get no sound.
Some things to note:

I have no problem with Audirvana doing UPnP with DSD to an older Marantz AV8802A Pre/Pro.
When reviewing the Audirvana settings, it recognizes my older Marantz AV8802A as a DSD playback device, but not my newer Marantz SR7011.
This same Marantz SR7011 works fine playing DSD over UPnP when using my JRiver application with mconnect app.
I spent $100 on Audirvana with the goal to replace my more complicated JRiver application. It doesn’t look like I’m going to be able to do that anytime soon. It appears this problem has being going on for almost a year now. I’m not point fingers to who is at fault here. However, being a long time Marantz user I’ve found these products to be very well engineered and relatively bug free. That’s not to say that perhaps they didn’t change something with the DAC ID with the implementation of Heos.
For now I’ll continue to use JRiver and mconnect, or perhaps stream DSD to my OPPO UDP-203 and pipe that to the Marantz SR7011.

Oh damn. I just figured out now that Audirvana cant play directly to my x3700h. So cant use that feature. Sad sad paying almost 100€ for software that doesnt work with new Denon. if thats not priority then i might consider next time doing deeper research. Doubt i will upgrade to new Audirvana in future if this is not solved. Denon app is option but its so bad and often unresponsive.

Hello,
I have the same problem with a new Marantz SR7015. DSD files work fine with HEOS App (using a WD MyCloud NAS) or JRiver UPnP, but not with Audirvana with UPnP.
I hope this could be fixed in the near future!

Same issue here with my Denon AVR-X3700H. It does work with Airplay 2 which is built into the Denon. Is there any loss of quality doing it this way? I vaguely remember researching this a few years ago and reading that Airplay works with Audirvana w/o getting in the way (DAC used is in the Denon, not in Audirvana or my Mac).
