Upsampling distort

I use macbookpro i5 8G ram, macos 11.7.6
audirvana studio 2.8.0
denafrips ares2 (now enyo)
When I set the sampling frequency to exceed 2X, the sound starts to be distorted. Is it a computer efficiency problem?

How are you managing your Audirvana output gain settings (Volume) ? … Try reducing the gain before upsampling… Upsampling will add dynamic range to the original file…

How much RAM is being used by Audirvana when you upsample to max device settings on your system? (Utilities, Activity Monitor memory tab) If it using more than 6GB I would reduce your preload buffer in setting/audio to +/- 4GB ram. With only 8 GB total your OS may be excessively swapping which could cause issues during playback.

The gain issue mentioned by @agoldenear in his initial post is a valid point also.

The playback pre-load memory allocation sticks-out as a commonly associated contributor to behaviors like you are experiencing…

I agree with @Djm1960’s suggestion regarding System memory vs playback-preload memory allocation… However, I differentiate, in suggesting to lower this allocation to 2GB.

You have the Upsampling parameters set to “Device Maximum” so, in the case of Audirvana Studio, the maximum PCM sample-rate output will be 1536kHz… this requires a lot of memory for calculations and packetizing for output transmission of the results… More available System RAM is better for overall playback performance, Especially, if your local Library is on the System drive…

I suggest using “Power of Two” upsampling for best performance… this will provide the mathematically correct results, best associated to the primary sample-rate…

Manage your gain structure…

Am I reading this right…

You’re saying that device maximum frequency refers to the output of Audirvana? Not the frequency of the connected device?
confused.

This is the maximum PCM sample-rate of the DAC…

It’s really a problem of memory arrangement. Now the problem has been solved. Thank you for your advice.

Cool, got it.
Thanks.
