Version 3.5.51

Audirvana has been working fine on my Windows 11 Alienware laptop… until now. Every one of the latest builds starts stuttering around 1:30ish into the MP3 file that is stored on my home network server. I use a Lumin T1 with hardwired Ethernet connection. Whatever happened with this latest build has made Audirvana unusable.

BTW - the Lumin app on my iPad played the exact same MP3 songs, from the same server, flawlessly from start to finish. I’ve now wasted an entire weekend trying to determine if something changed in my home network (nope), stereo (nope) or MP3 library (nope). This is an Audirvana problem.

PS - the latest version of Studio - what happened to the GENRE hyperlink in the left pane? Now its missing - which again makes Audirvana unusable to me, as i typically chose a genre to listen to and shuffle tracks within it to listen to. With that capability now gone, Audirvana’s superior sound quality means nothing to me since I can’t listen to my library the way I want. It is silly that with iTunes and a $100 x86 computer I can listen to music the way I want, but can’t do something so simple on a $50k stereo in my living room.

I just downloaded the Roon trial onto the same laptop to play files on the same network / Lumin T1. Plays files flawlessly. This is not a Windows / Alienware laptop / network / Lumin / MP3 file problem - this is an Audirvana coding problem.

Do you have this issue only with this file?

Good afternoon. My file server only contains 320 bitrate MP3 files. I don’t play other file formats on my streamer

Wait a minute. Are you sure you are using Audirvana Studio? Judging the version number you are using the last version of 3.5 for Windows.

Edit.
It does seem to be Studio.

Try to hard restart Lumin. Power it off completely, wait 30sec and then power it on again.

I reverted back to the older version, as the latest build of Studio omitted the ability to view the library by Genre - a dealbreaker for me. Same problem exists though- stuttering

Yep - tried that. even used the Lumin app to reset everything back to factory settings and rebooted it. Same problem (audio stuttering with only Audirvana)

Yes, it’s strange. Maybe an error? Or edited the log? It’s clearly not Studio. Even the db file is in the old format.

Just downloaded/installed/ran Twonky - was able to stream MP3 files flawlessly to the Lumin (but it only plays a file at a time, which is a waste). I then fired up iTunes 12.11.3.176x64; once again, perfect playback with 100% identical network/hardware/source files that Audirvana is stuttering on with the old version and the new Studio version.

Reduce the pre-load cache to 4000MB.

I made the setting change - fired up a Bon Jovi song and tried it… made it farther along without stuttering, so I stopped playback, terminated the older Audirvana version and reinstalled the Studio version (latest build). Made the same cache change, started the same song in Studio and started playback. Made it 1:41 into the song and it stuttered again. Terminated Studio, fired up the older version of Audirvana, started playing the same song and around the 1:39 mark it stuttered again. Terminated Audirvana, fired up iTunes (same laptop, using same MP3 server as the source). The Bon Jovi track played flawlessly with no issues.

Try to change the send RAW PCM switch in Studio. Make the pre-load cache even smaller, like 2000MB.

You can reduce even to 1024. Thar’s my current Studio setup and works perfect, with a cheap old laptop. Play mp3, flac, dsd, Qobuz, radios. But all the local files are stored on external hard disk drives connected via usb (2 & 3). I never used a server for storage, it seems Audirvana has some upnp problems. The most stable solution for me is Windows 10 1809 Enterprise LTSC (with Store/App Installer installed and updated + Webview 2 Runtime). I tried Windows 11 (with many things disabled) but is less stable than 10. Probabily because of my old computer too. And more slutterings (with 10 LTSC none). I don’t understand why people want the latest os, except when they need a particular feature. Oldies but goldies - stable and much more tested. And still officially supported.

Good morning. I reduced the cache within Audirvana Studio as close to 1024 as possible - the playback now has no stuttering after playing music for around 40 minutes!

Now my inquisitive side is asking the (internal) question - why would REDUCING the amount of cache to nearly zero a good thing within Audirvana? Is it because Audirvana is spending too much CPU time trying to cache data off the network instead of processing the currently playing file?

Perhaps Audirvana could/should (?) add a FAQ page loaded with tips like this to help out others? Just a thought

Thank you VERY much for your help - I will continue listening to ensure this problem is laid to rest and try to decipher the user interface issues within the Studio version (which are absolutely baffling to me - I wish Audirvana would seek out a UI consultant to wave a magic wand on this application).

When you allocate memory for pre-loading/caching in Audirvana, you’re starving the system of resources. This depends on how much stuff is open and how much of the RAM is used by other processes. Now with 16GB of memory, I’m a bit surprised you had to go that low. Do you run a lot of stuff in parallel with Audirvana?

Good morning - that was the only open application on my Alienware I-7 laptop w/SSD hard drive that was running. It is a VERY robust laptop that I also use for application development - and again that laptop has worked flawlessly for 12+ months with older versions/iterations of Audivana until yesterday, which made it even weirder.

No, RAM usage it is not the only problem. When I started this journey (2021) I had problems with slutterings/skips. First with 10 GB RAM, secondly with only 4. Doesn’t matter, I use software optimized systems (no antivirus, no advanced firewall, many things disabled and removed, just a basic protection, cpu around 1% when idle, ram around 30%, and the only app with more usage Audirvana). The problems has been resolved recently (February?) after they did something. I was very upset, canceling my subscription. Now most probabily I will renew my sub in August. And yes, low buffer is best for me too (just when seeking have to wait more sometimes but don’t care).
