White Noise on DSD (both DSF and SACD ISO) Playback

Hi All,

Longtime Audirvana user, first time poster (and my first playback issue).

I recently updated to Studio 2.3.4 and have been unable to find the right configuration to play DSD files (both DSF and SACD ISOs). I had to tweak settings for WAV and Tidal, but i finally sorted that out.

I have tried adjusting the following parameters:

  • Different buffer sizes (low end of 9GB to high end of 23GB)
  • Different DoP Settings
  • Updating MacOS
  • Different USB DACs
  • Integer Mode (off/on)
  • Large CoreAudio I/O buffer (off/on)

Issues persist with two different DACs (Chord Mojo + PS Audio Sprout100). Debug file below is from Sprout100:

Try setting Limit bit depth to 24bit: “ON” … (It appears from the PS Audio specifications, that Sprout only supports 24 bit PCM in Integer)

If you are trying to play DSD256 files, no can do… The maximum DoP 1.1 PCM carrier sample-rate the Sprout will support is 352.8kHz, (USB only)

Should be good there – all my DSFs/ISOs are DSD64.

Unfortunately the issue persists on both Sprout100 and Mojo; one of these changed settings is also causing white noise issues with TIDAL.

I tried several buffer sizes… moving downward from 6GB to 2GB in 1GB increments.

Another debug dump below in case others have thoughts/suggestions…

Did this ever play DSDxxx without noise?
Do you have a Local storage device that you can connect via USB and play DSD files?
Are you using a USB hub?
Are you wired to your router or using WiFi?

Try to drop two or three cd from dropbox cloud storage to a folder named ´test’ on your desktop, and add that folder to audirvana, and see if it still s*ck :grinning:

  • Yes. Issues didn’t start until the Studio 2.3.4 upgrade.
  • Technically all these files are local; they just live in a folder that syncs with the cloud for backup purposes. However, I have tried copying DSFs/ISOs to a new desktop folder (per @RunHomeSlow’s suggestion) and still get the same issue.

  • I have also tried to play files via an external USB drive per your suggestion above. Same white noise issues.

  • No. I have also tried different USB cables between the laptop & DAC. Issues persist.

The only variables in my setup over the past year have been upgrades to Audirvana software and MacOS. Honestly I’m surprised that I’m the only one experiencing these issues…

Maybe I’ll try a fresh install of Audirvana.

What about the Microsoft Teams Audio? Is this a recent installation?

Is the “noise” spurious clipping distortion or do you get complete digital hash?

We’ve covered the obvious things and you should be good to go… What Mac platform are you using? Are you running a Mac Mini headless?

Me again… been on the road for work a lot lately, and this issue got put on the back burner.

Still having issues following a fresh install.

I’m not sure how to answer that. It’s white noise (digital static) at the forefront with the music barely audible in the background.

Not a recent installation; it is part of the Microsoft Office apps I use for work. Prior to my current issues, I was able to successfully play DSD files even with Teams installed.

Just for information, I have used the original Chord Mojo, Mojo 2 and Hugo 2 with AS since its release. I routinely play purchased/downloaded DSD files from NativeDSD using DOP 1,1 and have never had an issue with background noise even though I always install the latest updates of the OS and Audirvana

A few differences in my setup, I never install the Teams Audio Driver, Teams works for conferencing fine without it being installed. Otherwise your system settings for a mojo are the same as mine.

The original cables that came with Mojo are Micro USB to USB A are you using a dongle to connect to your 14" MB Pro or did you purchase seperate Micro USB to USB-C cables (I use the latter). Could be a dongle issue if you are using one?

As the noise issue is applicable to two different DAC’s then its not a device issue. As a last resort, if all else fails, I would reinstall macOS from scratch with a clean install. Then copy across your music files and install Audirvana first. Try again. If OK then install your additional software and see if the problem re-occurs to ascertain if it is a software conflict.
