Your hint explains the Preferences. Still does not explain the greyed
when it is greyed out, there is no preferences made for that yet…
YET, fingers crossed 
Depending on the view (album, artist, etc.) some options are not available.
For example, it is currently impossible to sort albums in artist view.
Same goes for the choice between list and cover view. These icons should become active again in other views.
