Windows 11 DAC issues, Microsoft is working on a fix

Hi,

If you are experiencing this: DAC audio device cannot start after January updates.

Microsoft confirms Windows 11 January 2025 update issues, DAC audio failure

Kind regards,
Benno Jansen

This does not affect DACs from Schiit Audio as their USB interfaces are UAC2 compliant and do not require drivers.

USB 1.0 seems pretty ancient. I’ll quickly check today to see whether the driver for my directly connected DAC that uses USB 2 is affected. However I’m on the Windows Insider developer track, and it’s possible MS has already provided a fix, so others should check for themselves.

Not only Schiit. All modern DACs are USB Audio 2 compliant and do not require Windows drivers (except when you want to use ASIO of course). But still some people experienced audio problems even with UAC-2 compliant DACs.

Yesterday I received an (KB5050094 28-1-2025) Windows update and it seems that Microsoft already fixed the problem. On my Windows 11 machines (with Topping DX9 and Holo Audio Cyan 2) I never had the problem to begin with (maybe I was just lucky).

No problem with ASIO driver on Build 27783, as expected. (Pro-Ject S2 Digital DAC with ESS chip.)

Never had an issue with my Windows 11 (23H2 and 24H2) installations.

Bizarrely, this problem started again for me today when I opened Audirvana Studio. Music being sent to DAC, but no sound.

Fixed by switching to ASIO hitting play, stopping play, and switching back to Kernel Streaming. It’s the same fix I used a few weeks ago when this thread started and many people were having the same problem.

Anyone else?

No problems here on Windows. Are you sure you are talking about the same problem? Because MS made a fix almost a month ago. Also the original bug in Windows (and discussed in this thread) was not related to ASIO at all, but was related to USB Audio 2 in combination with Wasapi.

I realise that the problem from a few weeks ago was fixed by a Microsoft update, and that fixed the problem for me.

I am reporting now that I had the same problem today with DAC showing as connected but no sound playing. Obviously can’t be sure it is the same problem.

I don’t understand what you mean about ASIO. I use and always have used Kernel Streaming. But the stream was not outputting sound and I was able to fix the problem by switching to another mode (ASIO) and then switching back to KS, and the sound returned.

I did not know that the problem a few weeks ago only affected WASAPI mode. Whatever it was certainly also affected me using KS.

You mentioned ASIO in your previous post and I concluded there was a problem as well. I read it to quick.

I won’t be surprised to learn that you have to repeat that »fix« everyday. Or even less, every Audirvana session.
