A list of identified issues and whishes to improve the user experience with Audirvana

Dear all,

After several years of use, and most of the time a high degree of satisfaction, I still have a list of things that are annoying or need IMHO to be improved.

Here is my list, certainly incomplete but already large enough I think. Comments are of course welcome and details will be given if needed as I tried to focus on the main points and to be synthetic.

1- Connection impossible to a device that was off during night and put on before using AS.
I’m used to disconnect the device after a listening session and power it off, while AS remains up and running.
The day after, I power back the device and let the whole setup warming up (around 1 hour). Sometimes, but not all the time, although the correct device name is displayed on the remote, sound comes from the default device (Mac mini speakers!!). Although I use the refresh button on AS to retrieve all devices, it does not work as expected and I have to restart AS.
==> Current fix: restart the AS application (restart the remote is not sufficient)

2- Mixing cue sheet and audio tracks that creates duplicated tracks.
===> Current fix: remove manually the cue sheet to restart the sync process.
==> Solution: either to have a parameter to give priority either to cue sheets or to individual tracks. Or to ask the user if preference for a given album being synced goes to cue or to tracks.

3- Unability to detect errors in cue sheets resulting in missing tracks
==> Current fix: remove the erroneous cue sheet.
==> Solution: ignore cuesheet when inconsistency is identified.

4- Flutter (if that is a correct word to describe the situation) affecting viewing of booklet that sometimes put you back on the very first page or produce an error message (cannot read the booklet).
To be noted that the flutter also affect the progress bar that is refreshed every second. It also (not 100% sure though it is related) randomly move the album covers on the remote when browsing through the list.
This appears very frequently.
===> Current fix: none.

5- No direct and fast way to go to the album being played.
WHen playing an album and accessing the configuration for example, the only way to return back to the album being played is by tapping on the track being played (bottom of the screen), then accessing the list of tracks being played (playlist), selecting a track and clicking on the menu on the right (Three dots) , and FINALLY select ā€œdisplay albumā€. A bit tedious, isn’t it?

===> Current fix: none (unless I missed some shortcuts somewhere). ===> Solution: to create a dedicated button that put you directly in the album being played.

6- No possibility to have hierarchical views when browsing through the list of albums.
Either you have one album (i.e. one item) in the album view for each disk of the collection, or you have all tracks in flat mode with just a separator giving you the album id#.
===> Current fix: none
===> Solution: a collection of albums should be reached by clicking on one cover at the top of the hierarchy to directly access the list of included albums. Ideally, it should be possible to merge several albums into a new folder, or to unmerge a complete folder to retrieve the list of all albums.

7- No check of tagging consistency when syncing a new album: this result in one album being split into several albums in case album title even slightly differs.
===> Current fix: manually update the tags and let the syncing process correct the thing.
===> Could ask user if tagging inconsistency shall be corrected or not (Through a parameter or by asking the user during the Sync process.

8- From time to time, the famous error message (request/query error) appears and the action is not performed.
===> Current Fix: none.

My personal viewpoint and opinion…
If these ā€˜issues’ are of great consequence to a majority of users, then these should be ranked in order of importance by a significant consensus of users… What is the threshold for an ā€˜issue’ to be determined important to the majority of users and how is this hierarchy of importance, determined? … The question is not about wether or not any subjective user scenario has an ā€˜issue’… it is about whether or not the ā€˜issue’ is widely held by a majority consensus of users, or a significant enough number of users, operating under similarly relevant playback platforms, system configurations, playback settings and supporting component amalgamations, find these ā€˜issues’ in some way, inhibiting in nature, to the playback of the content. Playback functionality, must be a primary cornerstone of the experience and essential in the determination of the ā€˜importance’ hierarchy of any collection of user ā€˜issues’…

I believe, the subjectivity of a user base, gives rise to a variety of ā€˜issues’, just by nature of the individual user and their playback scenario from which they asses the nature of things that any individual user, may find as being an important ā€˜issue’.

So, as I have little issue with my Audirvāna Studio playback experience, it is not devoid of little snags… However, not so great as to impinge on the enjoyment of my playback experience here, on my playback system configuration and I personally don’t find any of the ā€˜issues’ listed above, to be of great importance or of consequence, in my personal playback routine and library management strategy and desires, after a few years of using Audirvāna Studio.

I have faith in the responsiveness of the development team, to important user issues in the context of the established sound-quality performance and practical usability of the User Interface and library management… Will they satisfy all users? Probably not, nor should they waste time and resources trying to address every individual user issue’ or ā€˜issues’ that have not been determined by a significant consensus, as hierarchically important.

These seem to be user ā€˜pet peeves’. The start/restart first point does not happen in my case. The other points seem to be personal likes/dislikes.

Audirvana is fundamentally a tool that grabs the audio stream and isolates it from outside influences. That’s what’s important.

@Agoldnear , @Antonio : Seriously?
@patifr spends a lot of time compiling a list of Audirvana behaviors and functions that bother him or that don’t work properly.
And your reaction is: These are not errors, but only perceived ā€œerrorsā€. None of this matters because Audirvana can still play music…

Um, let’s apply that to real life: My super super car drives great and gives me a lot of pleasure, but the side mirror wobbles and the air conditioning doesn’t remember the set temperature. Reaction: Yeah, that may be the case—but these ā€œbugsā€ aren’t that important to most users, you can quickly adjust the air conditioning—and anyway: The most important thing is that the car runs; all other ā€œproblemsā€ shouldn’t distract the manufacturer from their day-to-day business.

Sounds strange, doesn’t it?

Folks: We’re here in the User Voice and Feedback category of the forum. Isn’t it okay to say that Audirvana isn’t perfect and actually has flaws?

User feedback is the best way to make manufacturers aware of weaknesses in their products. This feedback should not be downplayed, but rather taken seriously – my opinion.

Car example is perfect… give me a great chassis/suspension/engine and keep out the fluff for those who drive computers, not proper fun cars. :grinning_face:

Hi @patifr Can help i hope with a few of your issues.

Issue 5

From iPad Remote - A couple of Steps. Press the Album Details on Bottom left.

Press the 3 dots beside the + and select show album.

Album Shows PS The second and third screenshot are out of order. Oops.

From Audirvana on Macbook Air

One step only. Click the Album Name in the information area at the bottom left. Takes you straight to Album.

Issue 6

Suggest you you could look at creating smart playlists for your Library. I have highlighted the main steps for you. In this instance i have created a list of All India Radio Albums in my Local Library. The Sorted them using the up/down tool in the middle at the top. Just press the eye in the Playlist on the left to see as albums or press again to go back to tracks.

This took 10-15 seconds to create. I’m a very slow 2 finger typist.

I guess you want to overlook my initial premise, because it is relevant? … I never stated the ā€˜issues’ are not valid to @patifr, nor did anyone term the issues as being errors, but you … It was you that added this hyperbole to fit your interpretation and manufactured false narrative. All feedback should be taken seriously in this context, and addressed appropriately when possible. The Audirvāna Community is part of the process and it serves as a great resource to sort-out ā€˜issues’.

The value of any given user ā€˜issue’ or ā€˜issues’ must be qualified in the context of the greater complex of Audirvāna user experiences… And far be it from me, to be the arbiter of individual subjective value. My experiences are different and may have relevance in the conversation…

I suggested a means for such issues and wishes to be prioritized.

Thanks @ChiliHot for this.

Regarding the ā€œissueā€ (Put quotes here to please some of you :wink: ) number 5, I did not know the shortcut to reach the album details in two steps.

But I regret:

  • To have two disctint behaviour, depending on the interface you use to interact with AS (App or Remote): it would be better to have the very same features and behaviour,
  • Not to have a straightforward link to the currently being played album, or a kind of popup that appears when you click on ā€˜configuration’ to be closed with a kind of ESC button.

regarding ā€œissueā€ #6, I will look at your suggestion, although it does not look at first sight as a complete fix of what I described (But let me play with the idea before I can conclude on that point).

Anyway, thanks for this.

Eric

Dear @Antonio,

You probably noticed that I did not criticize the audio quality of AS, and I can tell you I’m a very demanding person on that topic.

But what I’m also demanding is to have a reliable tool as my CD player is for example: I put it ON, open the drawer, put a CD inside and click on play, and that’s it.

With some of the issues I pointed out in my list, it’s not the same story: you try to add a new album and either it does not play on the right device or does not play at all, or is split into several album.

Yes, there are workarounds but I would prefer a reliable and repeatable behaviour.

@Antonio,

So, I can conclude that you will tolerate a sudden loss of the ABS system (or fuel injection computer) due to a bad piece of SW? Sounds like to me as a side effect of what Microsoft (for example) success in convincing people that SW is buggy …. by nature.

I even saw a General of the US army, pretending that being able to produce multiple SW updates in a short period of times (such as Amazon or Google) is a sign of quality. And she was talking about critical systems such as missiles….

What if your CD is scratched…? Is this a problem that the manufacturer must address, beyond reasonable error-correction?.. How do we define ā€œreliableā€ in the greater context, outside of your individual experiences? … Your wishes and issues may be contextually valid in your playback scenario… However, this is not to invalidate your perspective about these behavioral issues that you wish to improve… Where do these things sit on the hierarchical pyramid of user bugs, is the salient question…

Dear @Agoldnear,

I perfectly see your point and maybe the term ā€œissueā€ is not so much appropriate, and that’s why and pointed them as annoying or needed to be improved.

In my opinion, constant improvement is a quality we all should practice in order to be better. And by the way, this is considered as the last and most important brick of a continuous process improvement approach where you constantly monitor the current status of a process to identify how it could be improved.

So, whereas my ā€œissuesā€ are not so critical, and probably not perceived by lot of users, I think they deserve to be put publically on that forum to get your feedback and give you the opportunity of correcting me if I’m wrong or if I missed something and pretended to have identified an issue when there is none.

And honestly, if I were so disatisfied with AS I would have abandonned it in favour of something else. Here I’m just expressing a kind of ā€œtough loveā€.

Eric

@Agoldnear

If a CD is scratched, the CD player shall either correct the defect by correcting or replacing the missing data, or stop playing it in case it’s beyond repair.

That’s the same approach for a piece of SW: any corrupted data, and simply data not matching the input requirements shall be rejected to avoid error propagation and SW failure. That’s simply good practice but infortunately not always put in practice.

For example: if a part of your code tries to open a file, it’s your responsibility as a programmer to check that the file can be opened and not assuming it works in all cases with the risk of trying to access a file handler through a null pointer.

Hi @patifr , I will try to answer all your points in this response:

To ensure we are on the same page, are you referring to a connected device (such as a USB) or a UPnP/Chromecast device?

I presume you made back-and-forth tests before pointing this out. This is interesting. Could you please send an email to [email protected]? I would really like to reproduce this on my end.

The software should ignore them; however, we still create a log linked to it for information. Do you see a pattern like the first track not being synced when you’re in such a case?

Intriguing. How heavy is the PDF you try to view on the remote?

If you are referring to the Remote, when you tap on the currently playing track and then press the three-dot button, you should see an option to open the album of the currently playing track.

I’m sorry, I don’t get this. Can you please send some screenshots?

We check each track individually, and if there is a discrepancy at any point or if we are unable to obtain the track metadata, the track ends up in a different album. IMO, one option would be to open a window when the sync is over to tell you what tracks there might be an issue with. What do you think?

I’m aware of this. We are still working on the Remote right now, and I hope that at some point, I can discuss obtaining more precise error codes from our developers so we can clearly identify what is going on. The message is too generic here, and we can’t really determine what is going on.

I’m refering to an UPnP device (TotalDac server in my case). Default device is Mac Mini loudspeaker, which is not even an USB device. I will try to get some screenshots when this happens.

OK, I will send you an album that generated such behaviour and for which I was forced to remove the cue sheet.

I will send you an example of wrong cue sheet that is badly generated and cause AS to ignore one track.

OK, I will send you an example of such a booklet. This happened in several cases, but I’m not sure this occurs all the time. I will also try to catch the precise error message.

Yes, somebody gave me the very same info. It works but it’s a pitty not to have the very same behaviour as on the App GUI.

OK, I will send you a more detailed explanation and some screenshots on this.

Yes, I think that could be a reasonable solution in case the tool sees that tracks belonging to the same folder have to be split into different albums (That could be desired by the user but IMHO in very rare cases).

Yes, I see your points. I can try on my side to reproduce that behaviour with logs active to see if we can get more info.

Thanks a lot for your feedback!

One missing off your list is Artist sorting . Unless ArtistSort is set (I believe)

Take for example and artist like Alfred Brendel who has an extensive solo catalogue but has an equally extensive catalogue of concertos and chamber works where the Artist shows as say Alfred Brendel, Cleveland Quartet.

The solo works and multi artists works show as separate Artists , so I get 10 or so individual artists and nowhere can I see ALL of my Alfred Brendel works in one place.

It’s even worse where I get 2 groupings as Alfred Brendel and Brendel, Alfred so they are in different alphabetic areas of my library

I can’t show examples as I have suspended my subscription until it fixed

@Antoine,

I think I found one example that generates duplicated and missing tracks due to a cue file. I’m not sure where does the problem comes from (really strange cue files or AS misbehaviour) but the only solution I found to have all tracks present in the right order was to remove the cue files in all folders.

Thing is that the complete album requires 1.4 GB and cannot be sent by email. Do you have a shared folder to which I can try to upload the files?

Thanks

Eric

@Antoine,

Regarding the issue number #4, I found by chance a booklet on which the problem occurs but i’m not 100% sure this is due to the booklet itself (Not a big one by the way: only 800KB of PDF).

The observed behaviour randomly occurs with a flashing screen and a reset of PDF display back to page 1.

In addition, from time to time, there is an error NSURLErrorDomain that appears with an error number I did not catch due to flashing screen.

This could be due to WIFI but this is strange as I am very very close to the WIFI router…

@Antoine

Goog news, so to speak! I managed to trap the error message that appears sometimes when reading a booklet.

That time it appears on another booklet with a size of 1.6MB. According to what experts on the Web say about this error, it’s due to server closing the connection or something like that. Maybe a problem on the NAS side? I will try a reboot…

Cheers

@Antoine

And regarding the issue #5, I tried to find the three dots option on the currently playing track and could not find them…

Here is the starting point: configuration screen:

Then, I clicked on the album title at the bottom left of the screen and here is what I got: no three dot option…
