Tracks Stop Before End

Tracks playing on Audirvana Studio routinely stop playing about thirty seconds before the end of the track. It’s not all the time and I’m not sure why it happens with some tracks and not others. It happens both on streaming Qobuz and on tracks from my own library. It happens on CD-quality tracks and on hi-res tracks. Sometimes I can play a whole album without the problem rearing its ugly head while other times it happens on every track all day long.

I’m running a 2024 M4 Pro Mac Mini, 64GB RAM, MacOS Tahoe 26.2. The problem happens whether I use my Chord Mojo 2 DAC or my backup AudioEngine D1.
I’m running Audirvana Studio 2.11.5 (21105). In Audirvana’s settings, Exclusive Access, Integer Mode, Large CoreAudio I/O Buffer and Optimize System for Audio Playback are all enabled. Upsampling, Audirvana EQ and Audio Units Effects are all disabled.

Are there any solutions out there? Am I going to have to revert to using the Qobuz client and leave Audirvana behind?

Here’s the debug information. I’m not quite sure, however, what you mean by “playback system architecture.”

To start with… lower your playback pre-load memory allocation to 12-13GB… You are allocating nearly your entire System RAM for playback memory allocation !! … See what this does while we dissect the debug info…
:musical_notes: :eye: :nose: :eye: :musical_notes:

Another corollary in your playback behavior, is that it looks as though both your music library and Qobuz are obviously being transmitted on your network, where your music library is stored in the Apple Cloud service… I suggest you attach a local drive to the Mac for your music library for best performance, reducing latency potentials… This behavior could be precipitated by network traffic on the LAN… But you must lower your playback pre-load memory allocation…

Are you using a Wi-Fi connection somewhere?

Done. I had never noticed that it was that high. I just set it to about 13GB and I’ve played several tracks both streamed and locally and have had no problem. I cannot fathom why too much RAM would cause this and, yet, here we are.

If that’s the fix, great suggestion! I appreciate the help.

Good point. However, my purchased music library, while assigned to iCloud Drive, is stored locally (iCloud backs it up in the cloud, but I maintain a local copy).

Hi @Professor ,

Can you go into the Audirvāna settings and in the My Account section? You will see a ‘Start Log Session’ button; click on it and reproduce your issue. After you reproduce it, click 'Stop Log Session’ and send me the audirvana_studio.log file you can find by clicking the 'Open Log Folder’ button.

Hi, Antoine, I will try to reproduce the problem. I must admit, however, that after I lowered the memory buffer down to about 14GB as suggested above by Agoldnear, I have not been able to reproduce the skipping. But I will try for a few more hours.

The operational RAM demands of macOS in concert with the high-performance Audirvāna audio-engine/system operational demands, requires available free RAM… Otherwise the platform OS operations are forced to use ‘virtual RAM’ on the SSD which creates latencies and buffer under-runs… More available System RAM is better…

:musical_notes: :eye: :nose: :eye: :musical_notes:

@Professor
You will notice when the Playback Queue pre-load memory buffer is being filled, the CPU Load % will rise until the queue is filled…

This activity has the potential to influence playback sound-quality performance until the queue is filled when the System memory resources are not properly balanced to the allocation of pre-load memory… Also, this is related to CPU capabilities… The Apple “M” series CPU platforms are very capable, yet they demand RAM resources in the context of high-resolution digital-audio handling and symbiotic digital-audio application processes… This relationship, is key in understanding how to best allocate memory resources.

My personal scenario is based around a M2 Max Mac Studio with 64GB of RAM (approximately 13GB allocated for playback pre-load) running macOS26.2 and Audirvāna Studio v3 Beta… I modulate (up-sample) all PCM files to 1-bit 11.2MHz (DSD256) in r8Brain after applying Studio EQ and Cross-feed Virtual LR+C processing (I am headphone-centric). Music library is stored on a locally attached USB 3.0 SSD and the DAC is being fed via a very well filtered and clocked USB 3.0 transmission signal.

Thanks for explaining how that works. That makes sense and certainly fits what I’ve been experiencing. I’ve been playing music all day and since last night after you suggested drastically lowering the memory buffer and I have no issues since.

Hi, Antoine. It would seem that the skipping of tracks after about 30 seconds or so has returned with Studio 3. This time I logged the information. How do I get that log to you?

Thanks, RunHomeSlow. I don’t see a way to actually attach a file in a message. That’s my problem. I suppose I could cut and paste the whole thing and drop it into the text of the message.

yes like regular email drop the thing in the window… or select all and paste it in the window… you can drop pictures too

Apparently an issue with Qobuz…

Apparently an issue with Qobuz…

Perhaps, but I experienced it happening on various tracks within an album as well as within a playlist.

Thanks!

Which device is displaying the behavior?
Are you streaming files or playing from the local Library?
It appears your Library is stored on the System drive… Yes?
Are you using a USB hub?
Can you describe your power/ground/earthing scheme for your playback system?
Can you describe your UPnP playback network scheme?

I am using Audirvāna Studio 3.0.1 with no problems playing from my local Library SSD using the same system configuration that I described previously… Something else is playing into your experience.,
