Unable to play dsd files over upnp to Fiio SR11

I can play PCM files via upnp to my Fiio SR11 but when I play a dsd file Audirvana freezes. I can also stream via an hdd and that plays dsd files fine from my Fiio SR11 to my Fiio K11 r2r.

I reinstalled Audiervana as it wouldn’t play at all anymore now flac files play fine, but when I try to play a dsf file I get error loading.

It appears the SR11 supports DSD via DoP (DSD over PCM) on the USB output to the DAC.

Also it appears the SR11 has a setting for DoP output.

First… For security, remove relevant IP address information from the report…

Second… you are allocating nearly 99% (13.3GB) of your available System RAM (16.3GB) for playback buffering… reduce this to 4GB for best performance.

Third, something is not right with the report from the SR11 as it is only showing PCM playback sample-rates to 192kHz, when it is capable of playing PCM files to 384kHz, the limit of your K11 R2R DAC (You should be able to use ‘Power of Two’ up-sampling strategy, so to logically maximize the sample-rate capabilities of the DAC.)

Regarding DSD playback via UPnP…

It appears the SR11 does not support 1-bit .dff file playback via UPnP… If the K11 R2R supports DSD playback via DoP, then you must send DSD files via DoP 1.1… However, given the limited PCM sample-rate being reported, the maximum 1-bit sample-rate that can be played is 2.8MHz (DSD64) because the DAC is reporting the PCM carrier sample-rate for 1-bit 2.8MHz, which is 24/174.6kHz.

It appears the SR11 is not set-up properly to receive signals via UPnP…

  • Also, it is not clear that the K11 R2R DAC supports DoP… it may only support native DSD signals which it converts to PCM for playback…

When you get this sorted-out, and you are able to playback PCM sample-rates to 352.8kHz and 384kHz using ‘Power of Two’ up-sampling strategy (the maximum PCM sample-rate of you K11 R2R DAC) and the K11 R2R supports DSD via DoP playback, then the maximum DSD playback sample-rate playback will be 5.6MHz (DSD128) because the PCM carrier sample-rate for 1-bit 5.6MHz PDM (DSD128) is 24/352.8kHz…. The DoP processing in the DAC platform will extract the 1-bit PDM (DSD) signal from DoP file and present it to the D/A circuitry of the DAC… So, you must make sure Audirvāna is configured to use DoP 1.1 (DSD over PCM)

DSD playback doesn’t work

When playing to a UPNP device capable of supporting DSD with Audirvāna, the device must state it supports DFF. This information is available once your device is selected as an audio output in Audirvāna and going on the debug info. You can get it in Audirvana Settings>My account.

  • If you see this line: http-get:*:audio/dff:* under the section UPnP / DLNA supported protocols, your device supports DFF over UPNP.

I suggest you get support from the Fiio team on how to properly set-up the SR11 in this playback scenario.

Hi Thanks for your time I have the Fiio K11 R2r dac connected to the Fiio SR11 via usb, I changed the settings you suggested but I don’t seem to get anything streaming When I play a Flac file it plays fine until I change to another file than Audirvana hangs, but when I leave it playing it plays though a whole album fine song by song and I can forward the song and go back without issues but when I change to another song Audirvana bricks completely. I ran a utp cable with a switch between the devices but the issue stays.

Connect your DAC directly to your computer via USB and note the results after properly configuring Audirvāna and the DAC, to get a baseline operational reference…

It appears that you may not understand the ramifications of the SR11 not supporting 1-bit DSD .DFF files that are being sent via UPnP and that the K11 R2R DAC apparently does not support DoP signals…

So, in the case of the K11 R2R, you will not be able to play DSD files via USB or UPnP, because macOS transmits DSD files via DoP on the USB bus and on the Ethernet bus, and native DSD files (.DFF) via UPnP on the Ethernet bus.

You will need to configure Audirvāna to convert DSD files to PCM for transmission… Having Audirvāna do the DSD → PCM conversion will off-load this processing from the DAC platform, which can translate into better sound-quality by virtue of reduction of operational noise created by this DSP in the DAC and the potential for more precise calculations in the conversion DSP done in the computer platform.

Hi thanks for looking the dac was setup exactly as it is and was playing dsf files and Iso’s from audirvana, when I attach an external hdd to the Sr11 it plays dsf files on DSD128 and synchronises straight away with my dac. i bought the sr11 to be able to stream at least DSD128 and I wanted it on Audirvana to be able to play my iso files. But at the moment I am not even testing with dsd it will play aiff files and flac files but at the moment I switch to another file or album audirvana hangs, and I have to reset the connection, it played fine with the dac only lower quality.

The files on the HDD are delivered on the SR11 USB bus (not the Ethernet UPnP bus) and being converted to PCM in the DAC… Configure Audirvāna to convert your DSD files to PCM…

Hi thanks I think I start to get my head around it but now I have the following problem I can’t set the dsd over pcm simply because the option is not there.

I think at the moment we need to focus on just get Audirvana playing PCM files, I think I started the wrong way around because I was focused on dsd but I think the problem is that I can’t switch songs in Audirvāna and when that is sorted we can focus on dsd it looks like Audirvana can’t communicate with upnp correctly.

UPnP protocol can be manipulated by a manufacturer of a DAC or Streaming platform to operate in a proprietary manner in support of their operating systems and control software… This is a common issue… However, you are forced to conform to the functional operational support of the Streamer and DAC platform design architecture(s) in the context of file format support.

Close Audirvāna and relaunch it after making changes with the DAC and Streamer…

Hi thanks, I think I don’t have the option to do this on upnp, I am reinstalling audirvana again but don’t get the option I had the option with usb.

I explained this… apparently the K11 R2R does not support DoP, but the SR11 does… you have to configure to the capabilities of the DAC.. :wink: No need to reinstall Audirvāna… that is not the issue.

Connect the DAC directly to your Mac via USB to get an operational baseline reference.

That worked fine I can play everything to the dac, I didn’t change the settings, so basically the Fiio SR11 doesn’t work with audirvana unless I can get that option for the streamer.

Be more clear… What does ‘everything’ mean? Does the DAC support DoP transmission via USB? Or, are you converting DSD to PCM for transmission in Audirvāna?

The option missing from the SR11 is support for native DSD in the .dff format that is being used to transmit DSD files via UPnP in Audirvāna. You have not been clear about the support of DoP file playback in the K11 DAC… so I am presuming based on the information available about DSD playback from Fiio, that it does not support DSD playback via DoP.

Okay… that answers the K11 question regarding DoP support if this is playing as expected… So both the SR11 and K11 support DoP… What version of Audirvāna are you using? Can you not choose to send DSD via DoP when connected as UPnP?

In any event, I suggest converting all DSD files to PCM in Audirvāna, because the DAC decimates DSD to PCM operationally and this will off-load decimation DSP overhead in the DAC platform… also I suggest not using up-sampling in Audirvāna with this DAC.

Audirvana 3..5.50 (3580) and I don’t have the option to Send dsd via Dop With the Upnp connection.

So you will need to convert DSD to PCM in Audirvāna for UPnP transmission … Also, set your DSD limit to DSD128 so you can play those files…
