All depends on the licence (it’s very complicated and rarely enforced) but in the main open source does allow that.
GPL doesn’t allow closing source that was open, and also doesn’t allow use without attribution, so no, in the main open source would not allow that.
It depends whether it was released with a license and the type etc, derivation for commercial is permitted under licence conditions.
It’s a horrible subject and I’ll not argue over it.

Congratulations to the new AS!
First my equipment:
I listen on W10 PC Z77 chipset and I7 3770K, 8 GB RAM, internal soundchip VIA Vinyl VT2021, CPU-Graphics. Directly connected headphone Sennheiser HD 598. Using WASAPI mode and r8brain upsampling Power Of Two to max. 24 bit 192 KHz.
Yesterday I enjoyed 2 THC powered sessions and in this set I am extremely sensitive to musicality.
I must say that AS is sounding absolutely amazing (very detailed and transparent with a good sense for rhythm and a very kicking bass. Sometimes I had the feeling of hearing very well known songs for the first time)!! And for sure a bit better than Roon (in this setup). I hope you go on focusing SQ also in the future!
There are still some problems I found:
- Kernel Mode is NOT working with my VIA soundchip. Is it because it is internal in the PC? With my external DAC in my Philips TV over HDMI (only 16 bit /44,1 KHz) it is working. Or is it a bug?
- Replay Gain is not working streaming Qobuz (under Roon it is working with Qobuz) - only with my local CDs R.G. is working.
- When I open a local CD it happens often that the graphics is bouncing up and down very fast continuously (nearly flickering) until I grab the slider on the right and move it to the top. My screen resolution is 1080P.
I hope you can help me with this and keep up the good work!
As for SQ I can now agree that it is better for me than 3.5. With the default settings it was really awful but after a bit of experimenting I have hit the sweet spot. It is capable of being extremely detailed and airy and super smooth. The downside is that when used with a similarly performing DAC it is way over the top and with complex orchestral music it just couldn’t cope and became muddled. (I have seen some comments here refer to it as ‘veiled’) I have overcome that in two ways - one with the filter settings and also using a different DAC. The result is definitely an improvement over 3.5. It is great that we have the opportunity to fine tune to match our equipment. I still have major issues with UPnP however and that affects both DACs. I hope that when the time comes to pay for subscription these and other problems have been solved. I have a streamer which is highly rated as a piece of kit but is not adjustable in the same way and is not as good as Audirvana 3.5 or Studio for SQ but may just be a little better for radio.
I just received an email from Audirvana, titled “Keep calm and carry on”. It says, among other things,
“I N T E G R A T E D S T R E A M I N G C O N T E N T
because music is not the only thing to deserve HiFi processing”
What does this even mean? Clicking on the link in the email provides no clues. Does Audirvana have a communication problem?
There is indeed an element in that eMail that conjures up of Tone Deafness…
Not ideal for an Audio application!
I really wanted to like Audirvana Studio, the SQ is very good and the ISO Sacd functionality is great but guys what have you done ?
1- When you ask people to subscribe, you should give them a permanent enhancement like continuous editorial work. You don’t.
2- You software is intended to be an aggregator software, how it’s possible that the most elementary functions are missing : it’s really really a pain to get Metadata change, impossible to edit by group, no tags, no quick access to predefined rules, no possibility to customize lateral windows, and the automatics metadatas I couldn’t fine one .etc.
3- The ergonomie and esthetic are different things : ok, your soft is nice but ergonomically it’s awful even a very basic NAS app (Synology) or a manufacturer app (Naim for exemple) is better at this regards.
You choose to cross a risky path by going to the subscription model and you are way far from the competition…Hope I am not too harsh but I used to like your software.

Seems to me that absolutely EVERYTHING about this version is being rushed at breackneck speed.
Yes I was also admiring the pretty pictures of the remote app and scratching my head wandering what is the marketing department smoking.

If I have understood correctly the articulation between Damien and his colleague in the video, Damien is in charge of product development and his colleague of business issues.
Unless the colleague can produce lines of code, I can only suggest that for now, he focuses on providing coffee and sandwiches to the development team…

I found that the Studio sound quality improved immensely after the analysis of audio files was done. I think the analysis was creating noise.
Interesting. Would need to try again once a version which doesn’t modify local tracks is out.
So now I understand 2 things (the first point is from another thread):
- During the analyse process AS changes my audio files without permission and without the possibility to turn that off.
- While Audirvana is doing that (it takes days to complete when/if it does not crash) I basically can not play music.
Hmm I still have to wait for the fix before I start AS again.

the stop button is on the lest side of choice of speakers with a lock icon. To stop the player or change the speakers you should open this lock. When you play a file this lock will open automatically
