dCS Vivaldi issues with Audirvana Studio

Are you still using the proxy server?
Please post your complete Debug info here, when Upsampler is showing as the DAC… Also, please show a screen-shot of your Audirvana UPnP and DAC Output views…

Try a simple Ethernet connection from the Mac (with a locally attached library or files) to Upsampler to get a baseline reference… If this behaves without interruption, you can start from there… if the same behavior persists, you would need to ask yourself why other Audirvana/Mac users are not having this behavior, using UPnP protocol… The other question to ask is, why would a hand-shake be established and playback begins, and then be interrupted after a few minutes… Audirvana only outputs a digital-audio stream in UPnP protocol format, and is an asynchronous transmission… I suspect a clocking issue…

Could be the issue…

Also, will Upsampler handle DoP signals…? You may want to try DoP 1.1 transmission of 5.6MHz DSD…

Just noticed this…

If you are using the proxy server, this may be why we see this… I’m getting out of my expertise here, but taking an educated guess…

Interesting to see that the Vivaldi uses Rygel as its UPnP renderer. You wouldn’t happen to have Linux familiarity and a minicomputer on which to install Linux and alternative rendering software, do you?

I think I am using MinumServer for UPnP duties. And it’s running in linux on my Synology NAS drive …

The unwanted playback stop workaround I have had set both ways. I just set it back to on and same issue, no change.

From the dCS manual appears that I can’t use DoP on the network interface or USB interface, the other inputs do support it.

What you do you mean by the proxy server? I think we’re both running out of ideas…

There are a few pieces of software involved in UPnP. MinimServer is, as its name suggests, a server. You also need a renderer and control point. The control point is Audirvana. The renderer in your current setup is Rygel running on the Vivaldi Upsampler. What I was thinking of was substituting a mini-PC running mpd and upmpdcli, which together make a renderer, for the Vivaldi Upsampler, just to be certain it’s the interaction with Rygel as the rendering software that causes the problem.

Perhaps try stopping MinimServer to be sure it is not interfering with Audirvana. Audirvana can act as a UPnP server and control point.

Good idea. Stopped Minimserver. issue has repeated twice now. Curiously, 2nd time I had to pause for the playback for 5 min or so due to a phone call. Still happened on resume at about the same total running time (not counting the pause time)

I won’t be able to try your Rygel idea. I did post this over on the dCS forum to see if any ideas over there.

PS I had Roon Server running also, so both it and MinimServer Stopped now. Same issue…

At least we have narrowed the possibilities a little. Sorry we could not help more.

My final suggestion is to create a simple playback scenario using a direct and simple Ethernet cable transmission from the Mac/Audirvana to Upsampler…

Mac/Audirvana (Local library or test DSD files attached via USB) playback output via Ethernet → Upsampler → DAC For remote control (if needed) use the Audirvana Remote app. … If playback is as expected, you now have a baseline reference for a working system… If the behavior persists, you now have more information to work with.

Remove all audio software that will compete with Audirvana for Core Audio API’s

:notes: :eye: :headphones: :eye: :notes:

Agoldnear, thanks for all your help. I posted this over on the dCS forum and finding that there is a long history of Audirvana and UPnP issues. I may give up here soon unless dCS forum finds a solution…

Here’s another thread mimicking my issue Does DLNA/uPNP get the best out of Audirvana? - #14 by matt

If upnp is well implemented by the manufacturer and the network doesn’t have flaws it is rock solid.
I’m using it since 8 years (more or less) and I never faced a single issue.
My setup is Minimserver on a Intel Nuc8i3 , a SOtM sms200 and Lumïn control app.
I’ve used Audirvana too as the server and it worked without issues with the same SOtM sms200. Recently I tried Linux version too without any UPNP related issue.
A simple rpi4 running RoPieee instead of SOtM sms200 is rock solid as well.
So I suspect the issue is on dcs side … you should ask their technical support.
The story about UPNP flaws is in my opinion a fake.
Summing up, Audirvana works with

  • SOtM sms200/UPNP-DLNA
  • Rpi4/RoPieee/UPNP-DLNA
  • HQPlayer embedded/UPNP-DLNA
  • doesn’t work with dcs

This should give an idea to where look for the issue

One final thing, have you updated to Mosaic 1.4.3 which also includes a revised network firmware release 513. It was released a day before they announced “plays with Audirvana” support on the 9th May.

Link below. If you have not updated and installed the network card firmware update 513 (lists UPnP general fixes and gapless playback) I would suggest you do and give it a try. I assume the update may have been associated with the “Plays with” announcement being a day earlier…

https://dcsaudio.zendesk.com/hc/en-gb/article_attachments/13906834917148

To say something similar to @stefano_mbp but perhaps a little more gently: In my experience Audirvana adheres to standards quite well except where it must make accommodations for hardware manufacturers who do not. UPnP is a “standard” that is only loosely adhered to by many manufacturers. That is one reason why I made my own UPnP endpoint, so I could adhere to standards also. Since I have, like Stefano, there have been no more UPnP problems - everything has been rock solid. Of course I understand with something like a dCS Vivaldi, you would rather have it in your system.

I hope that Audirvana and dCS are able to work together and resolve the difficulty you and your dealer are experiencing.

Hi yes, I have the latest network 513 and 1.4.3 (151)

OK, as long as it installed correctly and you restarted your dCS upsampler then I think it is down to dCS/Audirvana support to find a solution. Best of luck,

I might add that as per @Jud post I find Audirvana’s UPnP implementation to be very stable with PCM upsampled to 24/384 and DSD 128 files over UPnP with a wireless connection to KEF LS60’s and LS50 Wireless II’s for the last 2 years (although I did initially have problems which was solved with a KEF UPnP firmware fix prior to this)

Hope they find a solution to your issue soon!

We all appreciate your willingness to implement the suggestions provided… I think you will benefit from the experience of implementing a simple and direct point to point (Mac/Audirvana to Upsampler) Ethernet connection… It is typical here of networked systems to be overly complex with too many variables and influences on the bit/packet level signals on the transmission path… Audirvana is a high performance audio-engine and should be implemented in this context… It seems many former Roon users try to fit Audirvana into the same system configuration that previously provided a useable performance level or into the scheme of a proprietary control system as may be the case with Mosaic…

With the information that you will glean from a simple Ethernet playback system configuration, your input will benefit other dCS users…

Personally, I would also make the comparison with a short USB cable sound-quality performance, now using Audirvana. All of the Upsampler inputs are galvanically isolated and it re-clocks all incoming digital-audio signals.

:notes: :eye: :headphones: :eye: :notes:

It appears from the thread you created on the dCS Community Support topics, that you have not implemented a baseline, direct point to point Ethernet playback scenario,(iMac/Audirvana with a locally attached library of files, via Ethernet to Upsampler) and you are continuing to use Mosaic in the playback context… Without a baseline playback configuration that demonstrates a working set-up using Ethernet (or corroborates the persistent behavior), you are not going to have a fundamental grasp on where to work from, to resolve the behavior you are now experiencing…

:notes: :eye: :headphones: :eye: :notes:
